Either Fox has a personal gripe with Tim Minear that involves kissing his ass, ordering his pilots, then purposefully crashing them into a wall, or they are just really, really stupid.
Take your pick.
I haven't seen Drive yet, and now it looks as if I never will. Variety reported this evening that Fox has already canceled the upstart drama after having produced just six episodes. As TV Guide has noted, this is the fourth series in a row for Minear to be picked up by Fox only to be canceled before even reaching the halfway point.
Firefly being the most notable, I can understand that the concept might fail on network television, but only somewhat. Lacking a broad appeal is an excuse that only goes so far when the content quality is clearly outstanding, as was the case with Firefly and probably Drive as well. Just how many series get canceled after 13 episodes only to spawn an expensive feature film within two years?
Yeah, I don't know either, but I'm guessing you could probably count them with one hand. So this begs the question, what the hell is Fox doing over there? Who in their right mind would be thrilled enough with a pilot to order $20-30 million worth of episodes (these days that'd probably cover 10-15 episodes not counting the pilot) only to shut it down in the beginning of a season?
Practically speaking with the pressure the networks are under from advertisers, I can see the need to dispatch a production that is costing an arm and a leg but not paying its bills, but why not at the very least let it complete the season so it'll sell better on DVD? Oh, wait a minute, that's probably because the networks don't get DVD revenue, the studio does.
Since I didn't catch any of the first and only four episodes, I can't make judgments about its quality like I can with Firefly, but I've got a feeling there was quality content there because Minear happens to be a very talented guy that I trust. I scoped it out sometime back and found that all my favorite episodes of Firefly where written by him, and had I known he was behind this series, you can bet your bottom dollar I'd have been watching.
It's a very sad state when a series needs to pull in X million people within the first four episodes or it gets canned. Think back to the early 90's when the X-Files hit the scene. Though I can't say for certain, I do know that Fox was still pretty new back then and I find it hard to believe that the X-Files debuted to stellar ratings.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it probably didn't do any better than Firefly did during the first half season, hardly any shows do. Had Fox taken its win-big-or-die-quickly mentality back in time and applied it to X-Files, I don't think it would have made it beyond its freshman season. I'm not even confident Fox itself would have made it.
Things take time to develop, but if you slice and dice in the name of profit as quickly as Fox has garnered a reputation of doing, you're gonna end up killing off the next tent pole series that could sustain you for 5-7 years and not even know it. Though I suppose that doesn't mean much to Fox given how well it's been doing lately with Idol, House, and 24.
Still, those programs are not going to last forever, and Fox isn't going to find a replacement for them by slitting their own throat.
Something is going to have to change, or the thing that kills off the big networks isn't going to be Internet piracy, it'll be their own stupid executives.

This sucks. I really enjoy watching Drive. Fox blows.

I wonder how many people said the same thing? That might have a bit to do with why it's getting cancelled.
But, frankly - I'm not sure why Minear sticks with Fox. It's just not meant to be. I bet he hangs out with Andy Richter and the two of them discuss ways to lift the curse.
If they wanted it to succeed they should have premiered it after American Idol and sooner.
I'm not surprised, but it still sucks. I really was enjoying the show.
FOX is run by idiots.
Fox Blows!
I actually enjoyed Drive. We weren't able to watch the Pilot, but we caught up online and watched the other episodes on the air. It certainly wasn't the best show ever (in my opinion), but it was entertaining. And I definitely would have continued watching it. Now they're showing House reruns in that slot? Pass.
I seriously don't understand canceling a show after so few episodes. You have no idea how it's going to perform. It looks like Fox wants another American Idol and they didn't get it.

Exactly. People need time to find out about shows and then warm up to them. They say they aired four episodes but that was over like a 2 to 3 week period. I was ready to have Drive be my every Monday night segue into Heroes. Too bad for you, Fox. And for me.
Also, people need to stop canceling shows with Nathan Fillion.
Very disappointing. I'm actually in the middle of watching the fourth episode. Guess I can just stop in the middle.
I'm considering never watching another Fox show again. First Firefly, now Drive. Bah. Screw this. TV is overrated. Time to start reading instead of watching tv.
My sister mentioned Drive to me this weekend but I had never heard of it. From this article I see that it aired on Fox. That explains it. My local Fox affiliate didn't grant a waiver for me to watch Fox on DirecTV so my TiVo doesn't pick it up and I never see it. Same for CBS and ABC. Oh, well. at least I got to see Firefly thanks to Bittorrent. Maybe I'll catch Drive there.
I've only been able to catch one episode, but I really liked the premise of the show. On the other hand, I know better than to get attached to a show on Fox that hasn't gotten past the half season mark. Stupid network.
Fox has a sad history of canceling great shows, often even before they have a chance to take off. Firefly, Wonderfalls, Arrested Development -- these are just a few examples. (Although at least Arrested Development had a decent run.) They are also terrible at promoting shows, which can explain the bad ratings. Look at Firefly and Wonderfalls, both of which had botched airings during the first few episodes. Firefly wasn't even aired in the intended order. No wonder why viewers have trouble following story lines and keeping up with when to tune in.
Once bitten twice shy... after Fox cancelled Firefly I decided not to invest any of my interest in their dramas.
They need to take a clue from SciFi network and BSG: if you are going to sink money into a production, you have to be patient to allow an audience to grow.
Oh well, I'm sure they will make a lot of money with "Midget Wife Swap" or whatever their next reality (i.e. get around paying SAG wages) project.
Fox doesn't even have the minute creativity it takes to produce "original" reality shows. It's sad that they need to rip off other networks' successful reality tv and put out their own special Fox-branded version.
File this under NOT surprised!
Fox sucks! I watched every episode and i really liked the show. It always ended with me wanting more and i couldn't wait until this week to find out what happened. I was extremely disappointed when i went to turn the show on tonight only to find out it is off the air. Do they only have idiots working at fox? As least give it a chance!
