Gov. Sarah Palin has granted the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one lucky turkey, but the video that shocked some viewers captured what was happening in the background.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

She must be one of the most unskilled politicians to ever give an interview.

Sarah Palin is not an unskilled Politician, she is an Alaskan woman.  It must seem odd that a woman can grasp the concept that you must kill an animal to eat it.  In Alaska, we like to eat meat which comes from animals which must be killed to eat. . . hum . . . what a concept.  Apparently, in the lower 48 this must not be the case.  Forgive our media for not sensoring the cycle of life.

What did everyone think was going to happen to the rest of those turkeys? Maybe the Turkey Fairy would come and whisk them away to magical Turkey Island, full of unattended corn fields and little turkey amusement parks. Hello? With something like 90% of American households eating a gobbler this Thanksgiving, doesn't it sound just a wee bit assenine to be shocked. It's unfortunate place to shoot a news piece, big deal. Palin takes a lot of crap. Yeah, I don't agree with her policies, but the mainstream media just loves to keep taking cracks. I wonder how much of this is because she's a Republican and how much of it is because she's a woman and attractive?

    P.S.- I'm a dem.

Don't you mean "very sheltered lives don'cha know?"

It's not about censorship. The pardoning of a turkey is a symbolic action, to show the gregariousness of our leaders. Showing the gluttony of the chopping block in the background makes the symbolism a wash, is the point.

There's nothing unskilled about her interview.  What this looks like is another media attempt to maker her look bad.  Was the camera guy glued to the ground and couldn't move?  All he had to do is angle the camera so just the live turkeys were in the background.  Palin had no idea which way the angle of the camera was and what was going on behind her.  It also seems that the "killer" could've waited until the interview was over.  Hmmm, maybe he's an Obama supporter?  The media has always given Obama the upper hand on coverage and have done all they can to make Palin and McCain look bad.  Anyone that disagrees should go back from day one of the campaign.

You are 100% correct in your assessment of this interview. I am a vegan and the interview offended me to the core! I have probably seen more videos than most of killing animals and abuse, but it still leaves me sickened to think I would have to watch this on national television as a nonchalant background of an interview. Also, there are children that are plenty smart enough to know what is going on......I find it offensive and laughable that she thinks that it was "fun".

Quit making excuses for this idiot. Who wants to see animals getting slaughered. Maybe on the next interview we will see dogs being Euthenized or a cow being hit in the head with sledge hammer.

Unlike you Palinites we just believe that this should not be a backdrop for an interview. Have you entirely missed the twisted irony in her speach. She pardons one turkey and watches the rest get be-headed. Why don't have your kids or grandkids watch the video and get their reaction?

I'm certainly a liberal, but my point wasn't that I care about the turkeys. I like eating turkey just as much as anyone else, and spent a lot of time on my grandmother's farm when I was young. It doesn't bother me.

What I was commenting about is the reason that it is a political blunder. It is like the Auto Execs who flew private jets to Washington to ask for bailout money. It's not that we expect Auto Execs (whose time is worth a lot of money) to hitch-hike. It's just a matter of screwing up politically, and showing that Palin has the political senses of, well, a turkey.

No one is denying that turkeys get slaughtered before I eat them. I've seen pigs and cows get slaughtered for food and it really doesn't bother me. What bothers me is a politician who is so clueless as to the force of the media power she weilds that she can't make a simple, Thanksgiving-day gesture without making such an obvious blunder.

You can't do a video of "How touching and sweet I am" when, in the background, the head is flying off of your symbol, as blood pours down its neck. Except that, well, she is a Republican. Maybe that's exactly how her party means to treat their symbols.

I had a turkey sandwich for breakfast. The tastiness, it was.

Your post is confusing. I said it didn't bother me, and no one claimed that you were making excuses for her.

I was pointing out that the reason that it is a story is because it demonstrates Palin's lack of ability to control her own press, and her constant media blundering, and that the story isn't about whether or not killing turkeys is "icky."

Plus: "hahahahaha" is a pretty lame attempt to make fun of someone.

          RoC,

you seem to be ascribing some sort of stance to the left regarding this issue.

Joe Scarborough laughed at her this morning. It is about the Irony of the video, not some disgust with the slaughter of an animal to stupid to keep from drowning in the rain (if those were domesticated turkeys)

Subtly does not seem to be in the nature of many conservatives/palinites.

It is FUNNY that she is trying to come off as sweet by "pardoning" a turkey, but then behind her, a turkey gets its head chopped off. FUNNY... not sad, not horrible, just FUNNY. and because it is funny, she can be made fun of for the lack of skill at projecting an image. Because she can be made fun of for a lack of skill in politics, it was thus, a dumb move on her part.

Got it? does that make sense to you and the other Palinites?

Well said. It's amazing how ridiculous some people are.

Yes folks, turkey's have to be killed in order for you to eat them. It's part of life. Just like taking responsibility for your own well being.

Hey, Joebuck! Why is a turkey so popular (no political intent)? Cause some like white meat and some like dark meat. The turkey serves us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                    Steven,

Failure to project the image that was intended by pardoning a turkey is a failure in political skills. Regardless of the true nature of where Turkey comes from, the juxtaposition of the saving the life of a turkey while the other one gets slaughtered is called irony and it kills the message she was trying to send.

Who Cares!!!! You take every opportunity to bash this woman. Leave her alone and focus on being the news again, not just a bunch of nut balls who are drinking the Obama Kool-aid daily. Can't you people get a life and address things that are more important like the economy going down the tubes, the housing business in a shambles thanks to the likes of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, and the likes of our President -Elect traveling the path that will leave our Nation in ruins? You sure as heck can waste your time bashing a decient person, but never, and I say never report the stories of your liberal buddies screwing up everything they touch. You have bashed our current President daily, and have said many nasty things about him, however not one peep about Frank, Dodd, and others who climb out from under their rock daily, and are in bed with some of the most corrupt people in the Nation. I used to watch the National media daily (NBC, CBS, ABC), but you have leaned so far left that it makes me sick. I offered my life to this Country for 20 years in the US Army to defend journalism, but journalism has died a horrible death in the past few years, culminating with opionated idiots on MSNBC and other networks who spew vile things about good people, but don't take the time to investiget others who are the true reasons that our Nation is sinking into the Abyss. Remember, the President doesn't hold the purse strings for the Nations Money. Congress does, and the Liberal Demorats (yes I speleed it correctly) have been in charge the past few years when all these shady deals have been made, and it has now caused the Financial ruin of many. Investigate them and get back to the buisness of giving the News, and not your opinion. You are supposed to be non biased, but all can see that you are not. Give back the Country to our people, and help us get rid of the corrupt politicians (both Republican and Democrat). Clean up your own house before throwing rocks at others.

I can only say ditto to everything Richard Stewart believes & stated.

As for the turkey scenario, how hypocritical can people be.  Unless you are vegetarian, you eat turkey & it is not alive when you eat it.   Just one  more jab at Sarah Palin & the more jabs the more people realize there must be something good about her or there wouldn't be so much negatives ran to try to discredit  her.  Now its down to "oh, she doesn't care if turkeys are killed for food let's watch it again."  I can't even say what I think the intelligence of these reporters are.  Get some real news or get a job butchering turkeys.

Well, I was a vegetarian for 20+ years, and still eat very little meat. I don't really have a problem with that video. I always thought that people who hunted or killed their own meat were more honest than people who didn't.

What really burns me though, is this business with protesting or attacking (with bombs in researcher's homes, and home invasions in broad daylight) medical research when right down the street is a supermarket that sells more meat in a week than all the monkeys used for experiments in the nation. (Alright, rant over.)

Anyway, this bit of Sarah I kind of like. It's straight-up and honest.

I was shocked and appalled at her ignorance of world affairs, and I am really glad she wasn't elected. But this? People should see what happens to make their sausage.

Seriously, people, the reason why this is newsworthy is because it is such a gem of irony! No one is going after Sarah Palin, she is doing this to herself. So Richard, if you want to go off on the "Leave Britney alone" vein, knock yourself out, but it doesn't change the fact that this has got to be some of the funniest stuff done by a politician that we have seen in ages.

And why do you feel that mentioning that you were in the Army will solidify your statement? I am a veteran and I am not expecting anyone to treat my comments differently because of that.

Why?   You don't like the truth? Go live on a farm for a while.

I live on a farm and have seen animals killed. That is not what bothers me about this. I think that it is poor taste to have some man (who is obviously playing for the camera) kill turkeys behind the governor. The President pardons a turkey every year. Do you see him go to a turkey farm and do inteviews in front of the processing area? no. he has more sense than that. I know that I can handle watching this, but have any of you ever thought that a small child could be watching this? That would upset a lot of children and vegetarians. I would not be surprised if PETA has a statement about this, shortly. It was a poor decision made by Governor Palin, but I have come to expect nothing less from her.

Oh, I am rather sure that PETA likes it, and that most vegetarians like it. :-)

I was a vegetarian for decades. Don't eat a lot of meat now. First meat I ate in many years was venison a relative had shot. I always thought hunters were honest meat eaters, never really had a problem with them as long as it's a clean, fast kill. Nature kills things by the billions.

you are absolutely right. All children should be removed from farm families and be made wards of the state so they don't have to see such horrors.

I was raised on a farm and have slaughtered or helped slaughter turkeys, chickens and cows. This has nothing to do with city/country or the slaughtering or eating of meat or if poultry magically shows up pre-wrapped in the store. It has to do with the incredible stupidity of her people having her give an interview in front of a grinning idiot that's slaughtering birds on camera. Her and her people should have enough intelligence to know that the raw ignorance of this would give an opening to every anti-Palin person out there. The fact that they are so ignorant as to do this shows that she's just plain too stupid to even be a politician and her staff are too stupid to work for one!

On Wednesday, a teenager here in Florida killed himself. 1,500 people watched him on the Internetand encouraged him to end his life. And they did nothing to stop or help him.

And you are worried about the way Governor Palin reacts to the death of a f%@  turkey????

How come the media is not giving headlines to the cruelty that took place in Florida?

Joe, I did not say that children should be taken off of farms. I was raised on a farm and my family is one of hunters. I have seen animals killed, dressed, etc.... I just feel that most children have not seen their food being killed, especially on television with a governor speaking as if nothing is going on. Forgive me for hoping that children could get through life without having to see something like this on television. If they live on a farm, they will be used to it by now. Most people, however, do not live on a farm.

Andnow, I just saw about the story that you are speaking of. It is horrible what our society has come to. I had a student write a paper about things like this. It is a sad commentary on our nation. I wish someone had been able to help this young men.  I will keep his family in my prayers.

damn, i thought our scientists had cloning down to where they could just pop out already cooked and prepped turkeys.

yes it is shocking for city-goers and suburban families. get over it.

however, she certainly picked the wrong backdrop for an interview, b/c i only heard about 5 words she said as i was focusing on the dude in the backround.

They are breeding the turkeys. Tame turkeys with huge breast can not actually breed each other. stuffing them in the funnel keeps them from flopping around. That's the head when he pulls the bird out.

Our food is provided by God, who works through people like the fellow behind the Saracuda. Apparently many people do not realize that God does not issue meat, poultry, and seafood in nice, neat, plastic-sealed packages like we see in supermarkets. Nope. First, it has to be killed, and perhaps caught first. Somebody has to do that. That's what the fellow is doing in the background. And then it has to be prepped - gutted, cleaned up, and so on - before it arrives oh so nice and clean and fairly bloodless and unsquawking - at the supermarket.

Welcome to a bit of reality, sportsfans.

Remember why he HAD to pick Biden the unreliable? Because everyone said he had no experience and needed on the job training.

I was not personally offended by the interview location, however, perhaps not standing in such a close proximity to the gentlemen killing the turkeys in the background would have been better. Maybe she could have chosen to move a few feet to the left so that you could only see the pen of turkeys. Although this is life and we all know that turkeys must be killed to be eaten on Thanksgiving, it doesn't mean we all want to witness the actual killing on TV. I am sure that PETA is going to have a field day with this.

I don't get what the big deal is.  I'll admit the process isn't the most appetizing thing to see, but how else do folks think we get turkeys on the table at Thanksgiving?  They're not exactly an endangered species...and the ones we use for our Thanksgiving meals are also not the brightest birds in the bunch.  They wouldn't stand a chance out in the wild anyway.  They're bred and kept for the purpose of being eaten in the future.  Must be a really slow news day or something.

I am sorry but this was just funny!  Sarah is good for a laugh, you betcha.  HAHAHAAH.  It was a mite gross though.  See that is what we are talking about, there is something to be said for down homeyness, but as a high ranking official it is not the place to be anywhere near something this is chopping the heads off an animal/fowl.  She does not know the difference.  Good grief, if she does not get this and clean up her language, there,  she will always be in Alaska which is fine with me.

In a word - hysterical. That Palin presidential bid is off to a roaring start. The people that run the republican party right now are total idiots.

Another complaint about the "Gotcha Media"? No sympathy here... She majored in journalism and worked as a journalist. How can you have sympathy for anyone that gets "showed-up" or "punked" by their chosen professional. This time it was just a funny coincidence. Why is it "news"? The real turkeys will be pardoned right before the inauguration.
