Gov. Sarah Palin has granted the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one lucky turkey, but the video that shocked some viewers captured what was happening in the background.
Who was keeping an eye on the Russians during all of this?
LOL good question Troy!
Okay so where does everyone think the turkey comes from? HELLO! I can't stand Palin but WHO CARES! There are so many terrible things going on in the world this is so minor and not terrible. HUMANS ARE OMNIVORES! Face it. Get on with your lives this so is not a big deal but of course the media made it into one. Get over it. If you don’t eat meat don’t watch it...do you people really think meat just magically appears?
Raven, its just indicative of her (Palin's) lack of political sophistication. Do you remember the stink over McCain's vomit green background during his early primary address? If an unflattering backdrop spurs endless comment--what do slaughters do for the political image of a prospective candidate?
For those of you who believe the issue is centered around the preparation of turkeys, you're as much a dimwit as Sarah Palin is.
This is about her ability to reason and deliver a competent solution to a simple problem. In this case a problem with a solution that was clearly evident, yet Sarah Palin remained oblivious to.
The real issue is that Sarah Palin remains now and forever oblivious. She has no ability to even sense when she places herself or others at risk. Not a good trait for any office especially the POTUS.
(Key Words) Oblivious ... Clueless ... Backwoods ... Valley Trash
At risk?????????
She was perfectly aware of what was going on. Go back to your sheltered life and wait for Obama to bring you your turkey.
Political Risk ... NUMBNUTS.
I don't have to wait for Obama to bring a turkey.....there's plenty right here! Keep reading, you'll see them!
Why? You don't like the truth? Go live on a farm for a while.
I was raised on a farm, but her total lack of sensitivity still SUX!
We all know where our meat comes from (all of us over the age of 10 that is). That is not the point. We do not need Ms. Palin to give us a lesson in animal slaughter. The point is that she has poor judgment and poor taste. I too am tired of seeing her on my TV. I just wish the media would quit feeding the beast.
Leave it to MSNBC to use the title "Turkeys slaughtered as Palin addresses media". Last time I checked, the killing of chickens has not been made illegal as the use of "slaughter" would suggest. I'm glad to see so many of the comments here are realistic and there is no confusion as to how we get our Thanksgiving turkeys. Lets just make sure we keep being vocal when we are told that what we do is wrong and we need to change, whether it is eating meat, what we listen to, what we drive or numerous other things that seem to offensive to an elitist few.
Slaughter implies illegality? In what world? By that premise every slaughterhouse is committing crimes everyday?
Orlimar26 ... what a MAROOOOOON!
Not sure how 'slaughter' equates to being illegal... according to Webster's
1: the act of killing ; specifically : the butchering of livestock for market
I haven't laughed so hard since WKRP did the turkey drop !
That was one of the funniest moments ever on TV!
I wonder if her handler was Les Nessman, Herb Tarlek or the Big Guy himself? Classic TV moment!!
Alice, they still do those turkey drops in the hills of Arkansas every single October . It's the damdest thing to see. And quite comical. Check it out
Les Nessman -- The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement.
Dr. Johnny Fever -- For those of you who have just tuned in, the Pinedale Shopping Mall has just been bombed by live turkeys, film at eleven.
Mr. Carlson -- With God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
Yes, sounds like the WKRP crew has struck once again in Alaska
Everyone knows that the meats that we consume are slaughtered I don't believe that it needs to be seen on national television, we all see enough horrors in our life. I don't blame Palin, I blame the interviewers, they could have moved her over to where the live turkeys were. I grew up in a hunting family from Maine, I ate venison, I never killed it myself, I'd help clean it but not take it's life. Some people have no problem taking a life, others do. Don't get your knickers all in a bunch because some people don't care to watch the slaughter. Those of you who do are the ones who probably try and run down animals in the road. TO EACH HIS OWN THIS IS AMERICA.
Good thing some people have no problem taking a life or we would all be stravin'; or veegan'. Helping clean it and eat it must kind of be like accessory-after the fact??????
They asked her.. she said it was no big deal.
Crow or turkey for thanksgiving at the Palin's?
Eris, I'm betting it will be turkey. The Palin camp sometimes will deny what they've done, and previously defended, when it becomes a problem, but I haven't seen any indication that they actually feel any shame for what they do. Or get caught doing.
Last I heard, from the same I-haven't-verified-it-for-myself source, her "people" are now denying that she knew anything about what was happening in the background.
Sarah Palin's 15 minutes are up. Stop shoving a microphone into her face. No one with any intelligence cares what she has to say!!
Yeah, but she's just so much fun to watch, like Evel Kniveil not making a jump. The artistry of of the disaster is just breathtaking
I think it is a shame that people keep harping on everything the lady does. The media choses what to show and they have been continually trying to find fault with her. No one is perfect. I'm sure the media will come up with all types of negative things about Obama and Biden when the new wears off on Palin.....
I wish for once they would start focusing on what is good about our elected, maybe we would have more confindence in their decision making. She is a good person and wants to do what is right, lets give her a chance to make a difference.
I hope the next women who runs for office doesn't have to go through what she has.
Just one more jab at Sarah Palin & the more jabs the more people realize there must be something good about her
OK, BB, I will concede the point. She is good for something. COMEDIC RELIEF!
I am a meat eater, but, to say it doesn't bother someone to see a living creature slaughtered is a sick minded person and a poor excuse for a human being.
"She pardons one turkey and watches the rest get be-headed. Why don't have your kids or grandkids watch the video and get their reaction?"
This grammatically incorrect comment was posted by the infamous "Take No Prisoners"
We would be so fortunate if Obama had pardoned "America" with his sharing of the wealth while showing the slaughter of all the millions of hard WORKING AMERICANS who would foot the bill. Those of us who can actually keep a job long enough to draw retirement down the road or save enough to buy a house, only to have it all ripped in half by taxes.
It apparently only takes a smiling face and a pleasant background to win over the majority of "America". Luckily there are still some of us who pay attention to what is going on in the background to see through the smiling face and pretty promises. Speaking of "grandkids", it makes me sick to know what kind of dilapidated world we are going to pass off to them.
This mistake was behind her. Now when Obama failed to cover his heart during our National Anthem that was right out front. My point being that people make mistakes I am certain that Obama loves our country, it was a mistake in judgement. One I guarantee he will never make again. Sarah Palin made a mistake with this activity going on behind her, but she didn't put it on camera.
She was asked about using that as a background and said it was "no big deal".
Once again you only answer what you want to, what about Obama? Try and pay attention.
Shadow Caster. Yes I did have a grammatical error in my post. Oddly, you noticed that while totally missing my point. Perhaps English is your strong suit, since it clearly is not history.
It is amazing how you jump to blame Obama for this country's problems, even though he is not even in office yet. You also appear to be totally ignoring the fact that Bush and his cronies disastrous deregulation and complete lack of oversight on the financial markets are some of the reasons why we are in this mess.
If you were truly paying attention to "what is going in the background" as you profess, you might not have missed those facts either.
Once again you only answer what you want to, what about Obama? Try and pay attention.
Obama is not the topic of this seed son, turkey's like Palin are. Try and keep up!
Placing your hand over your heart is required only for the pledge of allegiance not the national anthem. Some people do some people don't.
Do try to stay current.
I'm afraid he can't keep up try as he might, after all, he is a Palin supporter, so we shouldn't expect too much from him.
Looks like MSNBC (and the rest of the liberal media) will stop at nothing to make Palin look bad. Since it's occurring BEHIND her, wouldn't it make more sense for the cameraman to either mention something about what was going on (since he's the one watching it) or at the VERY least, not frame the shot to include the carnage (did anyone else notice that Palin is at the far left instead of centered)? A competent cameraman (or at least one without a left-wing agenda) could have easily turned the camera (or tightened the shot) to block out the view.
MSNBC didn't shoot this video, as other people have already pointed out, it was a local news crew in Alaska. Go ahead, blame them now. Damn that liberal local news crew in Alaska.
No one asked her to say she had foriegn policy credentials because of Alaska's proximity to Russia that was her own doing. No twisted her arm and made her forget what papers she reads if any, no one was holding a gun to her head when she did any of the numerous idiotic things she did. She did those all on her own. The press just happened to be there when she did it.
Not everything is the fault of the media.
In the interests of accuracy I'm afraid I misquoted what her staff said afterwards. They said that when she was asked about having the turkey slaughter as a background she said "No worries" and not "no big deal". I apologize.
;-)
Hi R. Don,
Not a problem; we all make mistakes.
Do you know if this was said before or after her staff saw the footage? "No worries" may have been the response because they were under the impression there was just a carcass or two in the background, and not anything more than that.
According to MSNBCs David Shuster it was after when they were being asked about why it happened.
As a professionally trained photojournalist, I can only look at this as an example of professional misconduct and lack of journalistic ethics. Had I done something like this in graduate school, the instructor probably would have flunked me for lack of objectivity. Poor taste would have been sufficient grounds. The videographer, not Palin, chose where he/she would stand with the camera and what would appear in the background. Inded, the videographer chose the "depth of field" that determined what was in focus. There is a possibility that it was simply a inexperienced or clumsy videographer, but the framing and focusing of the turkey processor is good -- so good that it appears that he not Palin was the subject matter.
Palin obviously had no idea what was going on in the background, as the MSNBC script reader admits. The point is all too obvious that viewers will wrongly and emotionally associate Palin with the events in the background -- and too many have naively followed the script. In the business, this is what we call prejudice -- it is certainly not news.
So, if I would have flunked my course for pulling such a stunt in graduate school, on the basis of ethics and objectivity, what kind of consequences will come to those an MSNBC who are responsible for this?
Hi Eldon,
That HAS to be it; isn't it the rule to send your most inexperienced and/or clumsy videographer to film the Governor's activities?
I'm sure this will be diligently reviewed by MSNBC's top executives before being completely swept under the rug. "Journalistic ethics" and "MSNBC" go together like ham and Haunakah.
As much as I hate to defend her, she should have final approval of all releases of interview tapes that she does or someone should. The problem is I think in all her issues is she just does not get it and think that all people think like she does. She needs to have the vision that she needs to act and speak in a way that does not offend people. You cannot please all the people all the time but you can narrow the field by being sentitive to most. Get a publicist and LISTEN to them this time if you ever have hopes of being in the big leagues.

MSNBC didn't shoot this. So much for basic comprehension skills.
MSNBC didn't shoot this. So much for basic comprehension skills.
What can ya do? They're Palin supporters.
Hi Paul and R. Don,
Funny, I looked at my posts, and I didn't see anyplace that I said that MSNBC shot the footage (maybe you should check your comprehension skills).
BTW, I checked Wikipedia regarding the Anchorage Daily News, which was the source of the footage. According to Wkipedia: "The (Anchorage) Daily News endorsed Barack Obama for president in the 2008 election, despite Govenor Sarah Palin's status as the first Alaskan on a major-party ticket." It also stated that the paper usually endorsed the Democratic candidate.
How surprising! A liberal media source shooting biased footage, then reported by a liberal media source.
What can ya do? They're Obama supporters (critical thinkers need not apply).
Oh come on now. Clearly you were blaming MSNBC for the whole thing!
And this story was reported by many news sources, not just MSNBC. No liberal media conspiracy here (or are you going to deny that you meant that too?), she did it all to herself and many people saw it. She's a buffoon and a clown, so you can't blame the media for showing that truth.
How surprising! A liberal media source shooting biased footage, then reported by a liberal media source.
Oh really? Then how does that explain how Palin stood there oblivious to what was going on 3 feet behind her while she blab on and on to the "biased" media she supposedly hates so much? Like a moth to a flame, she sees a camera in front of her and thats all cares about.
One mark of a good politician is BEING AWARE of what's going on around you. That she was too stupid or oblivious says alot about her skills of presentation and her ability to see herself from other people's perspectives, in other words, she lacks empathy.
Once again you only answer what you want to, what about Obama? Try and pay attention.
Obama is not the topic of this seed son, turkey's like Palin are. Try and keep up!
Once again you need to read a little deeper, I didn't mention Obama first it was in the statement that I responded to.
The US Code (Titles 4 and 36) specifies four circumstances for rendering the hand-over-heart salute:
1. When the US flag is raised or lowered
2. When the US flag is carried past in a review or parade
3. When reciting the pledge of allegiance
4. When the national anthem is played
The saluter should face the flag in all cases. If the national anthem is played when the flag is not displayed, the saluter should face the source of the music.
Just for your edification.
It is true that the U.S. Code states that "all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart." But the word "should" rather than "shall" makes that a recommendation and not a legal requirement. To confirm, Factcheck.com spoke with Anne Garside, director of communication for the Maryland Historical Society – home of the original manuscript of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and asked if anyone could be punished for not placing their hands over their hearts during the national anthem. She quickly replied, "Oh, of course not," adding that "there is no obligation to put your hand over your heart."
The Truth Shall Set You Free.
Not sure how we've digressed as such, but knock it off. The topic of this seed is Palin and turkey hilarity, not Obama.
That is right everyone. The only comments that should be uttered in this seed are insults against Palin and her obviously intellectually challenged supporters. If you try to discuss anything else remotely connected to the larger picture of politics you will be reminded of the narrowness of the topic. Too expand it any further will make the mods and Palin detractors mentally freeze up and start drooling on their keyboards. WE CANNOT HAVE THAT!!!
Obama is not the topic of this seed son, turkey's like Palin are. Try and keep up!
Once again you only answer what you want to, what about Obama? Try and pay attention.
RD, I think we are wasting our words. Maybe we should throw in some "you betchas" and "boy howdys" and throw in a few blah, blahs, a couple of inane ramblings and a wink. That should make it more understandable for them.
That's true, but it hurts ones brain to try to constantly talk down to their level.
BTW, best part about this video was the grinning idiot in the background who was slaughtering the turkeys! I mean he was right out of "Deliverance"! Looked and acted just like the guy that raped Ned Beatty's character while demanding he squeal like a pig. Classic Palin supporter!
they probably forgot you all only understand--the words--give--free--take--well, uh ---well uh....well uh......
Yes, it is very tiring, frustrating and pretty much non-productive. The truth is I am not an avid Obama supporter, I just know stupidity and ineptness when I see it!
R. D. S. you said it all for me. Thanks!
did you see all those democrats in the cage behind palin?
Sara is just where she needs to be; back in Alaska where she can keep an eye on Russia.
This lady is a rambling IDIOT! I know she has a few admirers that will run to her aide and suggest that the media is treating her unfairly. I just pray that she just STFU and go back to dumpster diving or simply sit in a corner and finish chewing on a fresh steamy bucket of moose nuts! First, please return the 150K clothes back to the GOP!. oh wait give back the over 300 days of fraudulent per deim claims that she you handedthe tax payers of Alaska. Or maybe she can give back the money for trotting her kids around the country at the tax payers expense. Palin actually does make Dan Qualye look super smart.
Yes, Darin, Palin makes "ole" Dan look like a rocket scientist. ROFLMAO
Eldon,,,,, Professional misconduct by a professionally trained photojournalist you say ??
Maybe he should have kept the camera off to hide her chubby cheeks & fat head -- Perhaps the sound man should have left the sound off to hide her stupidity
Eldon,,,, A professionally trained photojournalist couldn't make her look intelligent anymore than $250,000 of "Elite" clothing could ------ She's an idiot
It's her cluelessness that is astounding. Not that the turkeys have to die before you eat them. Like Pedro said, it kind of ruins the nice act of picking a turkey to live...
