It's official: U.S. is in recession

A panel of the National Bureau of Economic Research said Monday that the U.S. economy fell into a recession last year.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

If you think we are in a recession, think again.  It is called Depression.

While the government should have made this announcement months ago so that Americans could have made adjustments to their lifestyle, I think that the government held off because those in power did not want to alarm anyone. I also think that the government did not want to announce that we were in a recession with an upcoming election. It would have made the party in power look weak.....which it was! Now it will be much harder to pull out of the recession. I worry for the families that were barely making ends meet before!

Or it's because a recession has clearly defined principles.

You are either blind or to rich to care. Sales went up due the discounts and the fact that we are still trying to keep our children hopes up. However a large amount of people will still have NO christmas due to loss of jobs and their home. Children  that until recently had homes are now living in group shelters until their parents can find work again and a roof to put over these children's heads. Shame on you. I don't care what you think of Obama, he is next in line and even if he is not the great one so many project, he sure has to be better than the one going out..........

Recession and soon depression. Buy bulk food and water. Without the ability to borrow farmers cannot plant. No crops no food.

No more Corporate Bailouts! End the Federal Reserve and go back to real money (ie precious metal)

End all military conflict until we get back to no debt.

stop the spend and borrow practices.

oh and have a great day.

Just what the media wanted to create, a new "crisis". Stories on Iraq, Iran ,etc. were getting boring and the lection is over. Now the mesia can print and spin every event that is negative to keep the crisis going. Also, the day traders are making a killing of off market volatility (which they create). Bewtween the media and the day traders they are doing to the stock market what the speculators and media did to the price of a barrell of oil months ago. It is all smoke and mirrors to make some people very, very wealthy.

Trolls, do you really want to defend someone who posts this? It's not censorship - there are rules, the user wasn't following them.

[Also, threatening a President-Elect of the United States is against federal law and the user's in the U.S.]

"the government should have made this announcement months ago so that Americans could have made adjustments to their lifestyle,"

What?? Why does the government have to tell us to prepare for hard times? Have we  no common sense on our own? I for one am tired of the government telling me what to do and when to do it. Think for yourselves for a change. My home and land is paid for, no mortgage, my car and truck is paid for, I make my own power, etc. I also have money in the bank. Not as much as a lot of people but enough to get me through tough times.  Imagine that, I did all this without the government warning me that there would eventually be a downturn in the economy. Amazing!!

If we raise taxes it will be worse.  More spending is a bet that the possible inflation will be better than deflation if money dries up, probably true.  If this goes like the numbers indicate a lot of people will be really hurt.  This took a long time to happen and probably won't be fixed quickly by a government program since most programs don't do anything quickly, get ready for a rough ride if the crap really hits the fan.

I would be inclined to say "when the crap really hits the fan." My guess 3-09.

SickNTired, I really hope you are wrong.  As a nation we need to get together and quit the partisan banter, it is so useless.  I don't give a damn who gets the credit or blame this is a time when real leaders need to step up and do the right thing, I sadly have little confidence in the caliber of our elected officals and dont see any indication they have the will make the really tough decisions and look at the future outside of the next election.  On that score I hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

If Americans don't get their greedy little heads out of their asses... and stop rushing the doors at Walmart and stores that share their business practices (except walmart does do a little bit of charity work with the money that doesn't go to china) ... then we will be in something worse than even a depression here.  Our economy is now spiraling downward. If it gets past the bottom, then we become a 3rd world nation.

You'll still have racism, and people who hate and will continue to blame Bush, as well as those who hate and will continue to blame Obama  regardless of whether he turns things around or not.... and he hasn't even taken office yet.

Well, duh!!!  I think the majority of us had already figured out the economy was in trouble -- and most of us are not rocket scientists. It angers me that the Bush Administration has been asleep at the wheel then demanded that we hurry up and pass a bailout package for Wall Street. Bah, humbug! It's high time for us to invest, instead, in our infrastructure.

While Bush called for the bailout you can blame the Democrats for it.  They controlled both houses of congress and didn't have the guts to stand up and say no.  All they were interested in was getting re-elected so they could raise taxes and make people more dependent on government handouts.

Where have these "so, called"experts been all this time? This country has been in a recession for quite sometime and it's not going to get any better. We are in a recession because of greedy Americans who ONLY care about themselves and no one else. Americans are probably the greediest people on earth. They aren't only greedy, they are lazy and disrespectful also. This country is going to hell, and nobody knows what to do. Barack Obama is going to have his hands full when he takes office. First he has to fix all of George Bush's mistakes. Bush really screwed up this country with all his lies. I don't understand, why this country let him get away with it. And look at where we are today, going right down the toilet. And look at who Bush pardoned before he leaves his office, cocaine dealers. What about the border patrol guys who were doing their job, and then put in prison> What a bunch of crap this country is full of. It makes me sick to see this great nation going down the toilet, because no one seems to care what other people do. Our government needs to be over-hauled and get rid of some of them. There is too much corruption in this country. Senators taking so called gifts from oil companies and then staying in office. Something needs to be done soon or we can all kiss our asses good-bye.

4everamerica:  Yes and it is up to us to make those changes.  We have to speak out to our Congress and State Reps, etc.  If we would make our issues known, our government is "for the people" and must listen and act on our requests.  We have to stop being lazy (me included) and take the time to write letters, make phone calls, to our state reps, federal reps, and they will act.

This article was probably outsourced to someone in India. Better get used to it.

Just read about the outsourcing of newspaper articles to be written in India bypeople who  haven't a clue about America.  Ok maybe a clue but no real knowledge of the country and or what they are writing about.

Outsourcing at it's finest.  God forbid we have a free press in America any longer.

We must be fed only rosy pictures which will make it all better.  We can all stick our heads in the sand and know that it is all "in our attitudes".

I decided to change my party status last week.  My town allows one to first, officially cancel one's membership in that party.  Second, you declare your new preference and sign their paperwork.  Well, for a few moments between cancellation and joining a new party one is in limbo and without any party declaration.

I took advantage of that moment by walking out (officially, of course) without my new and written declaration.  The clerks were dumbfounded, but could do nothing.  I wished them a good day.  I am now officially a "listener and watcher", by my own design.  Their loophole was as big as a tunnel and I got a boot out of taking full advantage.

Party status?  Where on earth do you live? In my neighborhood we vote in the primary that we choose at the time we vote. If we want to change 'parties' we simply changke lines.  In the general elections it doesn't matter which party you think you belong to. There is only one line.  You must live on Mars or maybe Russia or Cuba?
