Ky. atheists want God out of homeland security

advertisement

A group of atheists filed a lawsuit seeking to remove part of a state anti-terrorism law that requires Kentucky's Office of Homeland Security to acknowledge it can't keep the state safe without God's help.

It seems more like a formality than anything, but I do find the inference that a state cannot be secure from terrorists of all people without talking about religion to be pretty offensive. Keep religion in church people, and keep it out of government.

That plaque looks more out of place than would the following:

Oh Lord, protect us from our friends. We will personally take care of our enemies.

It's a ridiculous, unnecessary, probably unconstitutional, and -- basically -- cheesy little "nod to God."  Completely out of place as part of official policy.

"It seems more like a formality than anything..." So was the Roman requirement that all citizens sacrifice a bit of incense to the genius of the Emperor. But the Christians seemed to take it as religious persecution then. Now, of course, they're in charge, so all you non-Christians have to fall in line with the little "formalities." And if your God objects, too bad!

As a strong Christian, I agree with the atheists on this one. This is unconstitutional, and unecessary. I have no problem with people in Homeland security believing and trusting in God, in fact I encourage that, but they seem to tack God onto this kind of stuff as though he were a good luck talisman and just by having him mentioned will auto-magically make things better. Well it wont. Those who believe that statement should hold it in their heart and pray fervently to God.

When politicians pass obviously unconstitutional legislation like this, in violation of their oaths to uphold the Constitution, it is reasonable to ask why they persist in doing so. The answer is obvious: They are shamelessly pandering! What does that religious reference have to do with national security? Did any god protect the United States on September 11th? Well, let's examine that: who were the most prominent fundamentalist holy men on that particular occasion? Oh, right - the lunatics who were attacking us! Please spare us from religious nonsense of whatever denominational variety. The principal of separation of church and state has served us well - let's not backslide!

The separation of church and state means the government can not tell us what religion we are supposed to practice, it does not mean we can not practice any religion. the majority of us practice Christianity and that is reflected in all of our founding documents. this will not change regardless of how much intolerance is shown by this small group of people or anyone else who can't stand that not everyone believes the way they do. religion is bad when it's forced on anyone but so are personal beliefs. until we learn to have respect for every ones beliefs nothing will get better and we will not grow. it is one of the main lessons of life.

The U.S. Constitutiion was written to protect the MAJORITY from the abuses of the MINORITIES.

It was the abuses of the MINORITY British over the MAJORITY Colonalists that led to the Deleration of Independance in the first place, so why the hell would you think that the U.S. Constitution was written to protect the MINORITY?

Keep Religion in Chruch and out of Gov.  That's so sad that you would say that.  The U.S. is in all the mess it is in because God is being taken out of the Gov.  Osoma Obama is trying to take In God We Trust out now, what's next.  Soon and very soon "Every knee shall bow and every tounge will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord ( Phil 2:10)."  The Atheists will have nothing to say on that day.  All I have to say to the Atheist and all other people who are believers other that Jesus Christ, when has your God died on an old rugged cross and rose from the grave.  Let me know that and then we can talk, but until then Our God is worthy of praise and adoration!

As a Christian I'm very offended by the atheists attempt to tear God from the fabric of American society, by their condescending remarks and implications that anyone who believes in God is intelligently inferior to them, and I'm especially offended by the way they talk about the Lord God that I love and worship. Does anyone care that I'm offended? Does anyone hear the voice of  Christians in America saying we're offended?  Offence seems to be the criteria for everything these days. Someone will always be offended over something. When one group attains what they want another group will be offended. Since when is offence the measure of what is right and what is wrong? It's a totally unstable standard for governmental and social decisions. I've never understood why those who don't even believe there is a God are so uptight about the mention of one. Why don't they just laugh, (to themselves), and shake their heads at the millions of "fools" who believe in God and go on. Since they equate God with Santa, the Easter Bunny, cartoon heroes, and other imaginery characters they must be very busy making objections all the time in many different arenas. Atheists don't get that those of us who are committed to our faith and/or religion can't compartmentalize when and where we'll live, walk and talk what we believe.  They do however understand their unwavering commitment to their cause which they live, walk and talk wherever they go. They want me to lay off of my stand for what I believe but, if they really want equality they will have to do the same.

    Emily,

And whose god, exactly, should be elected into our government? Yours? Why? This is OUR land, not YOUR land. You will not, now or ever, be allowed to force your particular beliefs upon the rest of the nation. Kentucky will continually be prevented from doing the same thing. It's been that way from the beginning. If you don't support that, you have no use for our protections from State-sponsored religion. Too bad for you.

I am amazed by the number of people that do not know the least bit about our government and make absurd statements such as get God out of government.  Every Founding Father, and I have posted the quotes on this site before, thought that the US should be based upon Christian values.  In fact the three branches of government are designed from Isiah in the Bible.  The Founding Fathers wanted a separation of church and state.  They did not mean for the government to have an absence of religion.  They all thought that without Christian values the Constitution would fail.

Now someone that goes to the internet and does a quick search will try and make the statement that so many Founding Fathers were diest etc.  Blah Blah Blah.  I will state this again, the Founding Fathers to a man believed that our government had to be based upon Christian values.  Everyong stop listenng to the ACLU and Katie Couric.  Pick up a book and read something and learn what you are talking about.

Thats pure disinformation Perry.  The genuis of the founding fathers was to make America secular to avoid the troubles religion caused in Europe.  And it seems pretty clear that Jefferson and Franklin were athiest. People like to revise history to fit their views. Next you're going to tell me the founding fathers were anti-communist.  I've seen people asert that. But, of course, Marx wasn't even born yet.

"Osoma Obama is trying to take In God We Trust out now, what's next." - Emily Reynolds

What proof do you have for that statement?  Your zeal is evident, but is it according to knowledge?  It is still wrong to bear false witness against your neighbor. (Ex. 20:16)

We know that we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren.  He/she that doesn't love his/her brother abides in death.  If someone says, I love God, but hates her brother, she is a liar.  For if she doesn't love her brother whom she has seen, how can she love God Whom she hasn' t seen?  (1John 3:14, 1John 4:20)

The Constitution does not prohibit the government from participation in faith based ideology.  In fact the Constitution itself acknowledges the existence of God.  What is prohibited is that the government make no law prohibiting religion.  So the government can't  pick one religion as the state religion over all others.  It also can't say that there will be no practice of religion.

If someone does not want to believe in God then that is fine.  However, the majority of us do.  Our nation was also founded on the belief in God.  So if people want a nation that has no faith in God then America would be the wrong place to try to have this.

I do not understand the need to insert God in this plaque, not sure of the point that is trying to be made.  I think it sends the wrong message.  Are they saying that they can't do their job to keep us safe because only God can?  If that is what they believe then we need some new people there.

It seems some people have become completely brainwashed by groups like the American Atheists Inc. When we look at our history we will see that in this country you have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.  You can follow whatever religious belief that you want and that includes atheism, but stop trying to take it out of our government’s foundations.  We are a nation founded by people who believed in a god.  In fact, the major difference we had from the British was that the British believed the only reason we have rights is because of government.  We Americans said wrong to the British, our Founding Fathers stated people have natural "god given rights" and that it is government that is established to protect those rights.  So I find it quite interesting when groups like the American Atheists Inc. come along and try basically to take us back to the British beliefs.  For some reason these groups are threatened by the existence of god.  Whether there is or isn't a god, why does this make those groups scared?  What happens if those groups are completely wrong?  Life is short, but eternity is forever.  Just because a government uses some quotes from various religions doesn't mean that they are forcing you to believe in a god.  If they tell you that you have to believe in a god, than there is a problem and they are not separating church from state.  I believe many people get caught up in the actually interpretation.  And the various organizations that are so threatened by the possibility of a god have become completely out of control.

not bashing the atheist, because God the creeator of EVERYTHING gave us the choice as to how to live our lives and weather we chose to honor and praise him..so that is their choice, would so love to see them attempt the lawsuit when they are face to face with him...the sad thing is he loves them more then thye will ever know. Hey Atheist look at it this way...you have a 50-50% chance of being right....so let say i spend my life praising God, worshipping him, honoring him and i died and NOTHING happens, did i loss out on anything...NOPE... now the flip side i live my life denying him living my life my way..and then i died and there he is just as Jesus said...well i guess i just lost everything...mmmmmmm BIBLE..Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.....and just in case you forgot..the Gospel is what our country was founded on..... it is 100% your choice

The separation of church and state is not found in the constitution anywhere!  Accordingly, the use of that phrase is subject to debate as to what it means or should mean or even if it supported by the constitution by implication.

Everyone uses this phrase but it has no constitutional support for it.

I do not understand the need to insert God in this plaque, not sure of the point that is trying to be made.  I think it sends the wrong message.  Are they saying that they can't do their job to keep us safe because only God can?

Not at all. It is implying that the reliance of security officials upon God's help is necessary for achieving the safety and security of the state.

As a believer though, I see no advantage to Kentucky to requiring these words to be posted in a state office. Those who believe that they are true should not need the state to reinforce their beliefs; that's what churches and clergy and family are for. It does Kentucky no good either to alienate competent security officials who choose not to believe in God but are otherwise proper candidates for their positions.

Oh boy, another theological food fight. Or is it faith fight.

The folks in Kentucky should know better, but they don't. If they find some comfort in calling on their version of God to help protect them then so be it. It won't work, of course. There wouldn't be any terrorists to deal with if he/she were paying attention.

I don't subscribe to any organized religion for the simple reason that the theistic version of God as presumed by Judaism, Christianity and Islam has degenerated into a many headed monster of rape, robbery, murder and mayhem for centuries. Any religion that marginalizes women, discriminates against the different tints of mankind, murders in his name and all the other irrationalities of theistic religion is not religion at all but merely the manifestation of fear.

In fact science has shown us that all the so called rain, sun, fire, water and other assorted gods are more the properties of our natural life systems than the active exertions of a meddling deity.

Being A-Theistic does not necessarily mean not having any belief in a God, just a rejection of the current incarnation that seems to get people so riled up. The values claimed by organized religions of today far predate those religions and are, I think, part of our human makeup. Indeed a founding tenet of Christianity "do unto others" etc, etc was first uttered by Confucius six hundred years or more before Christ. Whatever does any contemporary religion have to do with that?

In any event, God isn't going to keep us or the fine folks in Kentucky safe. That's up to us. The news story we are supposed to discuss has nothing to do with whose God can beat up somebody elses God. Or no God at all.

No doubt God is weary with being called upon to support and validate any kind of conflict fought out in his name. It's all too ridiculous.

What a bunch of IDIOTS! It is these people that are changing what America is, and what America is built from based on our four fathers.

Why is it the country is bending to THOSE WHO so called DONT believe in GOD / a GOD that we are giving them what they want, but those who do belive are slapped in the face of sorry, but we bow to the lower percentage of thsoe who DONT belive compared to a higher percentage WHO DO BELIEVE!

These people really get me sick, these moron are what's changing America and it's NOT for the better.

NBC took a POLL here are the results :

Do you believe that the word God should stay in American culture?

NBC this morning had a poll on this question. They had the highest Number of responses that they have ever had for one of their polls, and the Percentage was the same as this:

    86% to keep
the words, IN God We Trust and God in the Pledge of Allegiance
    14% against

That is a pretty 'commanding' public response.

    I was asked to
send this on if I agreed or delete if I didn't

    Now it is your turn.
It is said that 86% of Americans believe the word God should stay.

Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such
a mess about having 'In God We Trust' on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Why is the world catering to this 14%?

    AMEN!

If you agree, pass this on
     , if not, simply delete.

    In God We Trust

It is a fact that America was founded on the idea of religious freedom, that means that no one religion can be "America's Religion".  So as others have said on this post, which God, which religion do we include?  All of them?  None of them?  I believe if we cannot agree then it should be all or nothing and we use nothing.  End of the arguement, correct?  It just seems logical to me that there is no one true God, so why do we keep involving God in everything.  If you believe in God, great, go decorate YOUR house and YOUR lives with him wherever you want.  When it comes to Governing a group of people with different beliefs, then keep religion out of it.

I don't get the issue here.  A belief in God or no God doesn't give anyone the right to restrict Kentucky from instituting or using God on a plaque or in training material.  It appears that just the mention of God offends people.  We have all had to learn to be more tolerant in these last few decades and most of it was for the better.  I suggest Atheists take up the same attitude of tolerance.  If they would like to not believe in a form of religion that is fine.  I don't see anyone beating down any ones doors in this country forcing religion down our throats.  Tolerance is a two way street.  If there is a true majority in Kentucky that does not have an issue with God being used in their public buildings than so be it.  The Constitution is there to protect our individual rights but not at the sacrifice of the majority.  If Atheists want their way maybe they should congregate someplace forming a majority thereby giving them the option to establish a local government within this country without God.  I wouldn't want to live in a Godless city, but if it is such an issue I think that Atheists would have that right according to the Constitution as well as Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindu's, Hale Bop, whatever.

I am not too quick to call the Muslim belief system a religion - it is more like some large cult.  To preach the death of others that do not believe is at the very heart a non-religion principle.  Every religion preaches love of others.  Every religion preaches the sanctity of human life.  Of course every religion thinks they are the right religion.  But to have a group of people that believe in killing others out of faith and call them fundamentalist says about all you need to say about the Muslim "faith".  If a bunch of Catholics or Baptist got together and started killing people we would not call them fundamentalist.  We would call them crazy.  I know the Christians had their crusades as a response to Muslim attacks.  No question we have had our turn at being crazy.  But, we did not get that directive from the Bible - it was manufactured by the leaders of the Church and State.  The Muslims have it in their Koran - it is fundamental.  That has been a problem for centuries and will continue to be so for centuries to come.

21st John:  these 2 lines puzzle me:

A belief in God or no God doesn't give anyone the right to restrict Kentucky from instituting or using God on a plaque or in training material.

It appears that just the mention of God offends people

First of all, Government is government and CHurch is church--if religions were actually doing their jobs, then government wouldn't have to--examples:  welfare, food stamps, drug rehab......if religions were actually doing what Jesus would do then there would be no need for government to have these programs--IMHO, religions are just another way for Humans to gain power, prestige, money etc--in other words, no better than politicians

As to the other line, just the mention of Go d offends....no, but my belief in him is MY PRIVATE belief and there you have it....It's nobody else's d a m n business

Kentucky is just trying to show the rest of us how bullies get their way. The elected of KY really don't give a hoot if what they do is unconstitutional....most bullies don't. Shame on you Robin-hood-tactics!  You want people to believe you are a christian?  A true christian would never have the love it or leave it attitude. There is nothing in our government that says you must believe in a god in order to be a citizen of this country.

Atheism is not a religion.  It is the exact opposite.  It is the belief in no god.  Not everyone believes in a higher power.  Some people do not feel the need to put their beliefs in something that has never and will never be proven to exist.  This in no way makes them un-american.

Just as you don't want someone else's god forced down your throat, neither does the athiest.  Why should they be subject daily to others forcing their beliefs in their faces?  Not everyone believes the fairy tales in your bible.

My Father was a true Atheist he believed there is no GOD however since that was his belief he did not care if you believed in GOD nor did he ever get offended by people that prayed or had plaques or crucifix's he made a statement that stuck with me. He said if an atheist complains or files lawsuits to remove GOD or prayer that person or group of people are not true atheists they are confused and in their mind if they are wrong and there is no GOD then they want to have you go to hell with them for their confusion he said a true atheist does not believe in GOD so there is no hell so it does not matter if others believe in GOD nor is it offensive just amusing

So I Guess my point is the Atheist of America inc should change their name to I ain't so sure so I complain Inc

Let Homeland security do what the Founding Fathers of this great nation intended that is to seek the guidance of the creator I as a Marine as well as all my fellow Marines and other branches gave the people of Homeland Security the right to pray and we gave the Atheists the right to not pray however the atheists do not have the right to tell someone that they cant and if they do that is why people end up getting hurt

      Sparkfly,

Here is a short list of quotes.  I could go on for days showing these quotes. Note Franklins school.

      John Adams:
“ The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principals of Christianity… I will avow that I believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." --October 11, 1798
"I have examined all religions, as well as my narrow sphere, my straightened means, and my busy life, would allow; and the result is that the Bible is the best Book in the world. It contains more philosophy than all the libraries I have seen." December 25, 1813 letter to Thomas Jefferson
"Without Religion this World would be Something not fit to be mentioned in polite Company, I mean Hell." [John Adams to Thomas Jefferson, April 19, 1817] |

      Samuel Adams
“ He who made all men hath made the truths necessary to human happiness obvious to all… Our forefathers opened the Bible to all.” [ "American Independence," August 1, 1776. Speech delivered at the State House in Philadelphia]

“ Let divines and philosophers, statesmen and patriots, unite their endeavors to renovate the age by impressing the minds of men with the importance of educating their little boys and girls, inculcating in the minds of youth the fear and love of the Deity… and leading them in the study and practice of the exalted virtues of the Christian system.” [October 4, 1790]
John Quincy Adams: Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer's mission upon earth? That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity"?
      --1837,
Elias Boudinot: “ Be religiously careful in our choice of all public officers . . . and judge of the tree by its fruits.”
Charles Carroll - signer of the Declaration of Independence
" Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure...are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."
Benjamin Franklin: “ God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel” –Constitutional Convention of 1787 | original manuscript of this speech
“In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered… do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?” [Constitutional Convention, Thursday June 28, 1787]
In Benjamin Franklin's 1749 plan of education for public schools in Pennsylvania, he insisted that schools teach "the excellency of the Christian religion above all others, ancient or modern."
In 1787 when Franklin helped found Benjamin Franklin University, it was dedicated as "a nursery of religion and learning, built on Christ, the Cornerstone."
      Alexander Hamilton:
      • Hamilton began work with the Rev. James Bayard to form the Christian Constitutional Society to help spread over the world the two things which Hamilton said made America great:
      (1) Christianity
      (2) a Constitution formed under Christianity.

“The Christian Constitutional Society, its object is first: The support of the Christian religion. Second: The support of the United States.”
"For my own part, I sincerely esteem it [the Constitution] a system which without the finger of God, never could have been suggested and agreed upon by such a diversity of interests." [1787 after the Constitutional Convention]

      John Hancock:
      • “In circumstances as dark as these, it becomes us, as Men and Christians, to reflect that whilst every prudent measure should be taken to ward off the impending judgments, …at the same time all confidence must be withheld from the means we use; and reposed only on that God rules in the armies of Heaven, and without His whole blessing, the best human counsels are but foolishness… Resolved; …Thursday the 11th of May…to humble themselves before God under the heavy judgments felt and feared, to confess the sins that have deserved them, to implore the Forgiveness of all our transgressions, and a spirit of repentance and reformation …and a Blessing on the … Union of the American Colonies in Defense of their Rights [for which hitherto we desire to thank Almighty God]…That the people of Great Britain and their rulers may have their eyes opened to discern the things that shall make for the peace of the nation…for the redress of America’s many grievances, the restoration of all her invaded liberties, and their security to the latest generations.
"A Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, with a total abstinence from labor and recreation. Proclamation on April 15, 1775"
Patrick Henry:“It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” [May 1765 Speech to the House of Burgesses]
“The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.”
John Jay:“ Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”
Samuel Johnston “It is apprehended that Jews, Mahometans (Muslims), pagans, etc., may be elected to high offices under the government of the United States. Those who are Mahometans, or any others who are not professors of the Christian religion, can never be elected to the office of President or other high office, [unless] first the people of America lay aside the Christian religion altogether, it may happen. Should this unfortunately take place, the people will choose such men as think as they do themselves.
[Elliot’s Debates, Vol. IV, pp 198-199, Governor Samuel Johnston, July 30, 1788 at the North Carolina Ratifying Convention]
James Madison“ We’ve staked our future on our ability to follow the Ten Commandments with all of our heart.”
“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” [1778 to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia]
      At the Constitutional Convention of 1787, James Madison proposed the plan to divide the central government into three branches. He discovered this model of government from the Perfect Governor, as he read Isaiah 33:22;
“For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver,
      the LORD is our king;

James McHenry – Signer of the Constitution
Public utility pleads most forcibly for the general distribution of the Holy Scriptures. The doctrine they preach, the obligations they impose, the punishment they threaten, the rewards they promise, the stamp and image of divinity they bear, which produces a conviction of their truths, can alone secure to society, order and peace, and to our courts of justice and constitutions of government, purity, stability and usefulness. In vain, without the Bible, we increase penal laws and draw entrenchments around our institutions. Bibles are strong entrenchments. Where they abound, men cannot pursue wicked courses, and at the same time enjoy quiet conscience.

      Jedediah Morse:
"To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoys. . . . Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all blessings which flow from them, must fall with them."
Thomas Paine:“ It has been the error of the schools to teach astronomy, and all the other sciences, and subjects of natural philosophy, as accomplishments only; whereas they should be taught theologically, or with reference to the Being who is the author of them: for all the principles of science are of divine origin. Man cannot make, or invent, or contrive principles: he can only discover them; and he ought to look through the discovery to the Author.”
“ The evil that has resulted from the error of the schools, in teaching natural philosophy as an accomplishment only, has been that of generating in the pupils a species of atheism. Instead of looking through the works of creation to the Creator himself, they stop short, and employ the knowledge they acquire to create doubts of his existence. They labour with studied ingenuity to ascribe every thing they behold to innate properties of matter, and jump over all the rest by saying, that matter is eternal.” “The Existence of God--1810”
      Benjamin Rush:
      • “I lament that we waste so much time and money in punishing crimes and take so little pains to prevent them…we neglect the only means of establishing and perpetuating our republican forms of government; that is, the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity by means of the Bible; for this Divine Book, above all others, constitutes the soul of republicanism.” “By withholding the knowledge of [the Scriptures] from children, we deprive ourselves of the best means of awakening moral sensibility in their minds.” [Letter written (1790’s) in Defense of the Bible in all schools in America]
      • “Christianity is the only true and perfect religion.”
      • “If moral precepts alone could have reformed mankind, the mission of the Son of God into our world would have been unnecessary.”
"Let the children who are sent to those schools be taught to read and write and above all, let both sexes be carefully instructed in the principles and obligations of the Christian religion. This is the most essential part of education”
Letters of Benjamin Rush, "To the citizens of Philadelphia: A Plan for Free Schools", March 28, 1787
Justice Joseph Story“ I verily believe Christianity necessary to the support of civil society. One of the beautiful boasts of our municipal jurisprudence is that Christianity is a part of the Common Law. . . There never has been a period in which the Common Law did not recognize Christianity as lying its foundations.”
      Noah Webster:
“ The duties of men are summarily comprised in the Ten Commandments, consisting of two tables; one comprehending the duties which we owe immediately to God-the other, the duties we owe to our fellow men.”
“In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed...No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.”
[Source: 1828, in the preface to his American Dictionary of the English Language]
Let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God [Exodus 18:21]. . . . If the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted . . . If our government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the Divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws. [Noah Webster, The History of the United States (New Haven: Durrie and Peck, 1832), pp. 336-337, 49]
“The Bible was America’s basic textbook
in all fields.” [Noah Webster. Our Christian Heritage p.5]
George Washington "...reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle..."
“ It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible.” “What students would learn in American schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ.” [speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs May 12, 1779]
"To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian" [May 2, 1778, at Valley Forge]
During his inauguration, Washington took the oath as prescribed by the Constitution but added several religious components to that official ceremony. Before taking his oath of office, he summoned a Bible on which to take the oath, added the words “So help me God!” to the end of the oath, then leaned over and kissed the Bible.
James Wilson:"Christianity is part of the common law"

they are talking about God who is not a religeon - He is God.  There is nothing about talking G od out of anything in our constitution.  In fact, it ends --In the year of Our Lord........Please-please-religeon is one thing and God is another-lets not get confused about it.  It's all about taking God out of our lives with the atheists.

Perry J - You just wasted a lot of space. There are all sorts of made up quotes from our founding fathers floating around out there. Read their own diaries, books and articles. None of that crap is in them. You are quoting authors who made all this stuff up to try and circumvent an essential element of freedom in America. You can't read ABOUT the founding fathers to get to know them. You MUST read their own works.

Now, go and do your homework.

As a heretic I never believed that God was particularly interested in politics or for that matter any particular religion. Render to Cesar could be interpreted as render to the government that which they at least think belongs to them. Therefore, rendering to God that which is His means, rendering yourself to His commandments of which there are 10. God keeps it simple the government does not.

Given the choice in whether I trust God or the government ... In God I trust.

I think KY has taken it too far. We need to rely on our own free will, intelligence, and ingenuity. If you believe in God then you should belive He gave us free will. Here on Earth it's up to each of us to make the most of what we have and use our own resources to make decisions. Following those 10 simple commandments is  good advice whether you believe in God or not.

The truth is simple, it's the finding it that's difficult.

I frankly don't see the harm in having the statement.  I think it's kinda petty for an organization to concentrate their time on something like one statement.

Frankly, I think the whole atheist group is kinda loony anyway.  What I mean is that there are a lot of things I don't believe in that other people do believe in and they are all over the place.  I don't get offended by them.  Go into a Chinese restaurant, you'll see Buddha, but I don't believe in Buddhism.  It does not bother me, though.  Right now is the Christmas season but the atheists are not going after good old Santa - is he now real enough to be exempt from being removed from the world like atheists would prefer happen to God?

Here's my theory:  There is a little piece inside an atheist that tells them maybe just maybe there is a God and that is a serious threat to him/her.

I figure an atheist will pick on Christians because in general Christians are peaceful.  I don't see many atheists going after Muslims - probably not a coincidence that the "bravery" of the atheist ends when the possibility of messing with a radical Muslim rather than a peaceful Muslim by mistake.

Same thing as PETA messing with old ladies in fur coats rather than bikers in black leather.  It's easy to be "brave" when you don't have much to lose.

By the way, I am Christian, one of my best friends is atheist.  He does not have any belief system and it affects him negatively all the time.  I think it's a vicious cycle.  The atheist does not believe so when something goes wrong, he/she says things like "if there was a God, he would have stopped that."  A Christian realizes there is a reason for everything that happens.

Obvious Gollum references aside, I want to put this in a little perspective. The group "American Atheists Inc." is filing suit on the grounds that they're "not aware of any other state or commonwealth that is attempting to dump their clear responsibility for protecting their citizens onto God or any other mythological creature." Ad hominem aside, this person has obviously never used American currency. Unless the group plans to subsequently sue the United States Treasury for placing trust in God as a slogan for their plans in recovering a shattered economy in deep recession, I humbly suggest the bastards keep their hands out of matters that need not be meddled with, all the while opening a very nasty can of worms (we all remember the Ten Commandments statue; it's still there, idiots). This is misplaced idiocy and obviously a ploy; "we feel as though we're being undermined" doesn't hold in court.

Robin-hood-tactics, I enjoyed reading your post and appreciate your point of view.  I take no issue with the word God myself, maybe the use of Allah/Buddha/God/Jahwee/Me would have made this a non-issue.  However, I take some issue and respectfully disagree with you when you say:

Another note, "The seperation of Church and State" wasn't to keep the Church out of the State , it was to keep the State out of the Church.

I'm sorry, but ain't no way, ain't now how.  I agree that the church of any religion has the right to express it views by passing their messages along to their members, however, they should not be able to endorse politicians or preach politics unless they want to lose their tax exempt status.  The church should foster a spiritual uplifting environment and allow it's members to internalize those messages and act individually upon those takeaways outside the church when it comes to the realm of politics.

I mean no disrespect to religious institutions.  I believe that most of them are good.  I was confirmed Lutheran and attribute the morals and values that I carry with me today to that experience.  After studying many religions though, I am an atheist.  At the end of the day they all offer the same thing but in a different package.  An explanation of how we got here, moral guidance, and the idea that we'll continue to live on in some way after we die.  It's all very comforting stuff but I prefer to think that following the golden rule by exemplifying virtue, diligence, and brotherly love will keep me in good standing with God, if it's there....maybe that makes me agnostic.

One last thing.  I understand you're a trained killer and probably welcome a good fight, but if you want to create dialog you could do better by leaving out the statement:

HAMAS SUPPORTED OBAMA !!!! DID YOU ?????

I support whomever I believe to be most noble and just when upholding the Constitution and putting country ahead of self.  I make my decisions regardless of what anyone else thinks and wouldn't change it based on what anyone else thinks, especially a foreign entity.  I'm sure you did the same as a Marine.

GOP Rules, interesting you speak of your Christian faith and draw a parallel between Santa and God.  I think most people know that the idea of Santa was created in the 1920s by corporate America as a marketing ploy to promote increased consumer spending.  To be PC they now refer to this time of year as the holidays.  Ask someone outside North America and Germany who Santa is and you'll get some funny responses.  Interestingly enough, the church I went to as a child always condemned the idea of Santa as it undermined the idea of Christ's birth.  Being that you compared the two though, maybe you still believe in Santa, in which case I apologize.

This country was founded upon the precedence of a nation based on faith in God. This foundation is in our constitution, printed "In God We Trust" on our money; and every politician seeking election or re-election seems to finish his/her speeches with "God Bless America." Our original forefathers came to this country from England to practice faith as they saw fit and make faith an integral part of their every day life.

The original design of separation of Church and State, as stated in the constitution, was to ensure Government did not control religion and religious zealots did not control the government. As was the fashion of the day by the Catholic Church in Europe and the Church of England, during the 16th & 17th century. What fundamentally was a constitutional check and balance ensuring both religion and government has equal rights; has over the last four decades degraded into erasing all form of religious context; primarily using the words "God" from our schools, pledges, government buildings and public prayers. Our society is systematically erasing all forms of religions or faith based beliefs from younger generations.

This effect is not what our forefathers intended when writing the constitution. Faith in  God or whatever higher power you hold sacred was the founding base principle of this country.  Now our government no longer considers "God, Allah, Jehovah, Yeshua, etc." politically correct. We now have disgruntled minority atheist groups attempting to press their atheist's beliefs and overrule the majority rights of variety faith based population. The real irony is the increasing apostasy of this nation and why everyone, even the atheist's, cry out to God when there is a serious national crisis, such as 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina devastation and deaths.

You can't have it both ways, you can't "spit" in the face of "God" calling him unnecessary, and attempting to remove any sign of "God" from all public and government access. Yet, you expect your prayers of intervention answered in time of crisis. This type of behavior is similar to a "fair weather friend"; around when it is convenient and long gone the rest of the time.

Its abuse of authority at its simplest.. This is what CHristians have been working on for years.. Blurring the lines of church and State so they can create a Religious Government.. This is on the borderline of the creation of a Religious Police force.. This is pointing to a path like Afghanistan where non-believers are persecuted and alienated... That is the sum of the representation of this... Government should not even be allowed to talk about god because they need to be completely neutral on the subject.. They need to have their personal beliefs not be spammed into everyones life as if they are trying to force you to accept their beliefs.. What this ammounts to is "Tax Dollars" being used for religious propaganda or advertisement... I personally am agnostic because I don't trust the world of men or women with the responsibility telling us what to believe in.. The human world is extremely corrupt and such things as organized religion is used for corruption, power, control and even mass genocide.. Mortal humans are not worthy, much less capable of acting on "Gods" behalf... 9 times out of 10 its used in personal or political agendas to control other people..As if god needs some plaque to spread an ideology that could indeed be entirely wrong.. For all you know god gave you the ability to make choices for better or worse without any need for his help.. Its rather funny that religious organizations seem to think they know GODS will.. Chances are they don't know a damn thing... And what is gods will on those who pretend to know what he wants much less really know who he,she,it really is...They will mark sinners for not believing... Is god really that self centered that he would demand you pray to him.. Religous fanatics make god sound like Hitler.. Do not believe what they say and he will damn you to hell... I hear that way to often.. Organized religions are borderline cults... and when they turn violent it gets rather bloody... Witches get burned to the stake and blasphemors tounges cut out... all so convienently excusable by via confessions.. Just tell Jesus you sinned and your instantly free and clear to sin again and again..starts sounding like the Bailout plans for big banks...

Sorry, I don't trust humans or their ideologies on religion... Instead I choose my own path in life and live it the best I can.. And I see no difference in quality of my life vs someone who prays to god... I don't need anything but my own happyness and good deeds..

Lets put the issue out to the general public for a vote and see what the "Majority" has to say about it. The "Minority" has been running this Country for several years now and look at the shape we're in! This is another one of those double standards concerning the separation of Church and State. I lived in Louisville from 1967-2002 and every time I voted, it was in a Church. Where in the Constitution does it say anything about the separation of Church and Schools? It doesn't but it is no longer allowed. When will the Powers that be realize or at least acknowledge that a lot of our Societal problems are due to the lack of God in our Society?

Forcing people to say some "magic words" about how we need God's help to stay safe hardly addresses "the lack of God in our society."  In fact, that kind of shove-it-down-others-throats "religion" just makes things worse.

The state must not MANDATE that people acknowledge a Deity.  That is a violation of civil rights -- freedom of religion includes the freedom to not have one, and freedom of expression includes the freedom to NOT participate in religious speech.

If you want to live somewhere where "the general public" gets to pick the state religion, you could always move to Iraq.

akshoe59, the constitution was written specifically to protect the rights of the minority from the will of the majority, sorry...and while I do find this to be a bit of a trivial issue, it's just another example of religious right-wingers attempting to turn this country into a theocracy.

I don't believe that belief in God can be mandated. Belief in God is a personal thing and even God does not require that you believe. God clearly gives each and every one of us the choice to believe or not. We are simply admonished to understand the consequences of our choices.

          Akshoe -

The problems with Society today are not due to the absence of god, but the presence of god.  We would not have had a 9/11, a war in Iraq, a terrorist attack in India, etc. etc. without religion. The very existence of Mankind depends on ridding the world of mythological belief in imaginary deities to argue over. End religion before it's too late and we might just save ourselves from extinction.

Gosh, this is the tiredest old internet screed of them all.  We wouldn't have universities without religion either -- or hospitals, or the fine arts, or any of the innumerable other wonderful and lovely things which have developed out of humankind's devotion to the belief in something or someone beyond themselves.

Like everything else in the realm of human life, religion gets used and abused.  That doesn't make it evil.

Believe it or not, "the very existence of Mankind" does not depend on everyone adopting your viewpoint.  Shattering, I know.

akshoe, I could not agree more with what you posted!! We acquiesce to the smallest of minorities way too much in this country. I see absolutely no problem with what Homeland Security is doing, and as a matter of fact, I applaud it. Yes, put the issue to a vote and see what the MAJORITY has to say for a change. I am by no means a bible thumper, religious zealot or anything like that, but asking for a little help from above never hurts. If as an athiest, you don't agree, simply ignore the plaque and go about your business. Why should the majority always bow to  what is certainly a very small minority?

As a child, after attending Catholic elementary school, I went to public High School. We always saluted the flag, said the Pledge of Allegiance, and then listened to a bible verse or two, and said the Our Father. The ending of the prayer was slightly different than what the Catholics prayed, so I simply said the end as I was taught, instead of the different way. NO BIG DEAL!!!  This issue with Homeland Security is also NO BIG DEAL!!!

Smallest minority? There are 38 MILLION ATHEISTS in the US alone, and the number is growing all the time. Separate_Church_and_State. Funny how Right-Wingers point to the few Christians in the founding fathers, but leave out Franklin, Jefferson, and a horde of others who were either deists or as close to Atheist as you could get in their day.

Lack of religion the root of evil in our day? Ridiculous! It's interesting how many of the craziest, most-repressed, coniving, self-righteours, hypocritical people I've met (and I'm VERY well travelled) went to Catholic school...hardly a glowing representation of how complete immersion in religion leads to a better, mroe truthful, charitable, wholsome life...in fact, they have been some of the most miserable, tortured people...always guilty, always wriging their hands, and then doing all kinds of things that were in direct violation of their indoctrinated beliefs...and perversely getting off on it.

"When will the Powers that be realize or at least acknowledge that a lot of our Societal problems are due to the lack of God in our Society?"

There is no lack of God in our society. If there was, there would be no need for a separation of church and state, and people wouldn't need to raise alarms when that line is crossed. God is very much alive in homes, churches, temples, religious schools and private charitable organizations. Children instilled with values relative to their faiths will then bring these values INTO society. Not "Christian" values or "Hindu" values or "Muslim" values or "Buddhist" per se, but the essence of religious teachings which share commonality, and which all may benefit from in a pluralistic society. If problems in our society are due to a lack of God in our society, then fingers should be pointed, not at "society" or at government agencies, but at individuals. God does not cease to be in our midst because the Ten Commandments are not allowed to be displayed at a court house, or because a creche isn't allowed to be displayed on public property, or because students in a public school aren't allowed to pray there. God dwells in the individual heart, and this presence flows outward from there. The act of "keeping God out" of certain public spheres does not make God invisible. It provides a neutral ground - given our religious and spiritual diversity - on which we can meet, sharing those talents, abilities and values which are shaped in part by the God whom we honor and esteem.

Living in the south, I often hear discussions over the school prayer issue, and how people blame that on how our society is now. One of these discussions I asked my friend (a devout Christian) how she would feel if the teacher leading the prayer was Jewish. I asked, "would you like her leading the prayers and telling your children that Jesus is not the son of God?" She became enraged and said "NO!" So I said, "there ya go. Leave the teaching of relgion in the home and the Church where it belongs"

            Hey, Writing Athena...

We would have universities and hospitals and places of higher learning and art and they would be much more advanced than today had it not been for the religious nuts stifling and suppressing science, art and free thinking for centuries just to "maintain control" over the masses in the name of the all mighty Pope.

Hell the Pope once led armies against non-believers, ex-communicated free thinkers that were on the right track but their thinking was counter to the church's, and most great minds like Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton were afraid to speak in fear of the church.  Only after others proved their points did the truth become known to the people.

How wonderful of the church to foster such learning...

No one is shoving anything down anyones throats. It's a plaque with with a statement on it that doesn't require anyone to believe in it or even read it. People do have a choice, if you don't like it then don't read it and just ignore the sign.

Hipocrisy runs rampant among both atheists and the religious who are constantly quibbling over trivial sh#t. If people would just shut up and stop pushing their own agendas and criticizing each other there would be less divisiveness among us. Respect each other for what our beliefs and sit on your tongues.

We criticize Congressional members for political childlike bickering over legislation but yet we cannot seem to find our own common ground and tolerance when it comes to religion.

Personally, my rights are not infringed upon nor am I outraged by the statement on a plaque in front of a building. It doesn't interfere with my every day living nor does it change the way I have been doing what I usually do.

Over the course of the Human experience I would guess that more people died at the hands on non-religious events than at the hands of religious events.  Hitler killed a lot of people not our of religion but out of some hell bent idea of creating a superior race.  WWI was not started as a religious war. Vietnam not a religious war.  Korea not a religious war.  Japanese did not attack us as a religious war.

True there have been a lot of people that have died at the hands of greedy, power hungry alleged religious leaders who garnered support for their own personal goals by creating a religious basis for their actions.  However, we have had greedy power hungry leaders do this without religion as well.

There has been a lot more good that has come out of religion.  Some others on this list have identified those positive things.

As for the bickering of atheist and those of faith - the atheist want to force their belief on the rest of us.  I can't pray in  a public place because an atheist says that offends them.  If the atheist does not want to pray then don't.  But if I want to then I should be able to.  Maybe it offends me that the atheist will not pray so maybe they should be forced to pray.  But, those that favor freedom of choice somehow say it is OK for the atheist to silence me.  So why does the atheist get more of a right to tell me how to act?  Does the Constitution give the minority the right to tell the majority what to do?

The status quo is pretty strong in America, so both opposing view points bang their fists against a wall, hoping that the smallest concessions will lead to a slippery slope of transition.

So yeah, even small issues like these matter a lot since our judicial system operates on precedence and much of what happens daily is based more on de facto law than a rigorous interpretation of the constitution and federal laws.

Religion in and of itself isn't evil but the people who claim a particular religion seem to have a knack for doing evil things to those percieved not to share the same beliefs.

I find it ironic that people are willing to injure and kill those who don't share their beliefs in ddirect contradiction of the very same beliefs the profess to follow. It seems to me that radical religious types are incapable of introspection and self examination as it applies to their version of God.

Personally I wonder how many Americans would kill in God's name for the sake of conformity with their beliefs here at home if they thought they could get away with it.

Bilbo, I don't see where anyone is succeeding at turning this country into a theocracy.  Explain how please.  There have been more individual right victories in this country in the last 30 years than not.  How much further must we go into giving away rights before we give too much?  Freedom of expression is a two way street remember that.  All of you remember that.  I have seen more vindication in the forcing of liberal beliefs in this country than that of conservative and I am a moderate independent who truly stands in the middle.  I also have kids.  I have a hard time swallowing what my kids are allowed and forced to talk about at their public school which I find much more disturbing than having the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.  I'm tired of the schools teaching tolerance for ideas I do not believe in and try to guide my children from.  I have never been taught religion in a public school outside of saying the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.  But on a daily basis I have to hear my 12 year old son come home to tell me about sex, condoms, homosexuality, and other topics that do not belong in school.  And I don't mean the mention of these words, they are being taught about these subjects by teachers from a social standpoint and not a biological standpoint.  The biological standpoint I have no problem with.  He has 12 year old friends that are male and female that consider themselves gay when they haven't even reached true sexual maturity yet.  Now days in his school if a boy is a bit feminine or a girl is a bit masculine they are called gay by their peers because these children have no real concept yet of what it really means.  What is that doing to children?  And no, I am not gay bashing.  I don't think that a public middle school is the place to indoctrinate ideas into children.  That is my job as parent and my childs choice at adulthood.  Let me make this crystal clear.  I have no problems with the words being used.

21st John, I am an educator and I'm truly sorry that your son goes to a school where things are taught that you do not like....that said, none of the kids at my school are taught on any of these subjects...we live in the Bible Belt and are forbidden to discuss such things with them....sad too, because our pregnancy rate is WAY above the state and national average...you see our kids are ignorant about themselves and their bodies...all of this because the religous beliefs of our school board....so don't tell me we aren't heading toward a theocracy....I'm living in one on the local level....and so if we're not supposed to stimulate a child's ideas and mind then what am I teaching children for?

Bilbo: Let me get this straight--in order to stimulate children's minds, and lower the pregnancy rate in the South, you have to teach kids to use condoms; have sex with people of their own sex; that God is a fairy tale; that their parents don't know anything, only the almighty State does; that nothing they do wrong is their fault, it's the fault of everyone around them; that the State will take care of them from cradle to grave; that stealing from the rich in the form of higher taxes to care for the poor is right (never mind that churches and charities and communities did a MUCH better job until Lyndon Johnson came along with his "Great Society")? If that's so, I'm really glad my children go to Catholic school, and are smart enough to understand that morality means you control your urges, not your urges control you.

Perhaps if you started teaching children that it is better to control themselves than to give into their urges, you would not need to discuss how condoms are great birth control and approving of homosexuality means that you are compassionate and intellectually superior.

Perhaps if you started stimulating their minds with the ideas that honor and integrity are harder paths, but ultimately more satisfying, you won't have to be teaching children that even if you are not mentally mature enough for sex, it's okay.

Perhaps if you take the time to teach them that there is a greater world out there and that if they rise above the base animal nature of man, they can create something truly powerful instead of arguing the merits of same sex vs. opposite sex.

You see, Bilbo? Even without religion, there is a whole world of better things to stimulate a child's mind with, things that can make the world a better place. Rather than argue with your school board about religion, why don't you stimulate their minds with the greater things in life, instead of the lesser?

You must be from Kentucky.  The reason I say so is because I have friends in Louisville and that is the expression they use to describe the area.  Well I am from Louisiana and we have a majority christian population.  With that said, we do not teach religion at our public schools.  The kids cannot even say the Pledge of Allegiance anymore.  About teaching.  I'm all about education as I mentioned before from a biological or scientific standpoint.  The point is that I am a moderate and feel that the teachings here have swung too far left.  I don't know how to explain it but you would have to see it to believe it.  Of course, Louisiana's education system is a huge failure from an educational standpoint on a national level.  There are many school systems in other states that may be more successful at educating children but so many are leaning towards this indoctrination of political correctness and sensitivity training.  That is not the schools responsibility.  The point of the article was the fact that Atheists are upset because of biblical phrases in public view and that God was used as a protectorate of sorts in their training literature.  The word "God" is on our money and believers and non-believers alike spend it the same way.  This is a "when in Rome" situation.  It is a predominantly Christian country.  Christians are a strong majority in Kentucky and if they "believe" that God may help protect them what is the problem?  It just isn't even offensive enough to merit the amount of time any of us have spent spitting out this dribble.  If God applies to you great.  If not, that is your business.  I don't see the point in battering a local majority because they "did" use God.

Writing Athena:  "the whole system of higher learning in the West" evolved from many things, most importantly the Academy of Plato (thus the term "academia") - definitely not religious.

Of course, churches have started a great many very fine universities - but a lot would still have been created in the absence of religion as well.

wq-610538:  Where do you get the idea that "the atheist want to force their belief on the rest of us"?   I haven't seen any atheist tell you what you or any other individual should believe or not believe.  Have you really been told not to pray in a public place?  Really?  I don't think so.

You also say "Does the Constitution give the minority the right to tell the majority what to do?"  Of course not - and the minority is certainly not telling the majority what to do.  What the Constitution most definitely DOES do is say what the government is not allowed to do, including endorsing one particular religion.  That, unfortunately, is what the government in Kentucky is trying to do - if any individual (including government officials, speaking for themselves) want to say they have certain beliefs, that's fine.  But where this clearly goes over the line is by an official pronouncement of government endorsing a religion - that is clearly unconstitutional, and it's just plain wrong.

My God Athena, I was OK with you up to your last sentence; First off,  the poster did not mean to imply we needed a state accepted religion voted on by the majority, only that KY voters could choose to leave the language in or not. The same  about the "In God We Trust." The language does not validate a state controlled religion. I understand it is offensive to you, but no one is going to make you or any American bow their head and pray. People mumble words and lie through their teeth every day. You all have your knickers in a knot.

How many different sects of Christianity are there? My point; There is and will always be  different doctrines between them. Why are you so paranoid about religion? At the end of the day Religion is who you really are not a nomenclature.

They can't prove there is a God that's why it's faith based, and atheists can't prove there isn't. ... Check Mate.

Back to your last sentence: it's ironic, you sound like the very people you protest. My way or the Hi-way.

                      Jo,

"My God" -- such a funny way to begin a post on this thread. Was that irony, or something less witty?

As to my last sentence, I did not -- as so many people often do on Newsvine -- say something along the lines of, "If you don't like it, leave." That would have been puerile posturing.

Instead, I was suggesting that the oh-so-brilliant apologist for "majority rule" religion recognize that what he/she thinks would work wonderfully well in theory works abysmally in fact. There are indeed places where questions of conscience are a matter of majority rule, where the government has in fact decided *by vote* to give preference and privilege and protection to certain religions, and not to others. America -- so far -- is not one of those places. Nor should it be.

As to my being "paranoid" about religion...

The thoughts I have expressed in this thread may or may not be adequately sophisticated for the refined tastes of discerning Newsvine readers like yourself, but they are certainly not the lazy, lackluster, lobotomized rantings of the straw-man debaters and talking-point regurgitators who have never had the curiosity, the courage, or the discipline to critically examine their own preferences, prejudices, and presumptions -- such as the presumption that because I have employed strong polemical rhetoric to make a case against the civil or "democratic" imposition of religious norms, I must somehow be "paranoid" about religion.

In fact, I'm an ordained Baptist minister -- yes, Baptist churches do occasionally ordain women -- with a pretty thorough grounding, thanks to years in seminary and more years outside of seminary, in Biblical languages, historical theology, comparative religions, and all those other fascinating topics that put most people to sleep. That's on top of a very fine liberal education -- refreshingly secular -- from one of the most prestigious universities in the world. So please excuse the fact that my constantly refined opinions about religion and public life are not the sort of pat provincial pronouncements you can easily pigeon-hole.

To put it in terms you might grasp...It is quite possible for a person of deep faith, a (gasp!) Christian, who is not personally offended by the phrase or the sentiment behind "In God We Trust," to consider that phrase an unneccessary and perhaps even improper slogan to put on our national currency -- especially when others will argue that, by using a currency so marked, atheists have forfeited their right to protest what they consider to be the improper interference of the state in matters of conscience.

You might want to expand your horizons a little bit and realize that a committed Christian can be a committed defender of the principle of separation of church and state. This does not make us paranoid. It makes us good citizens, and good neighbors. Just a thought.

No, our country was built on principles of freedom and democracy, which includes freedom from Governmental interference and control of our private lives -- religion is a matter of conscience, and the Government has no business using its considerable resources and power to try to "force the conscience" of its employees or the citizens they serve.

Our country wasn't built on "In God we Trust." That was added on later. Even our coins and monetary bills doesn't have it until the late 1860s.

The founding fathers did stress about the importance of separation of Church and State. Look at what is happening in nations where religion has the final say. It is no better than dictatorship because a few of the religious heads have absolute power.

And look at the hadnling of the so call priests who have been "manhandling" boys for years. If I am correct, I think that is a sin to do so and a sin to lie about it (for which a majority of the religious head ignored the issue for a long time).

How about the inclusion of religion during World War 2? Look it up, Hitler has priests and the church blessing his troops also. And further back in history during the Crusades, both sides have religion on their backs.

Its the same as "don't do business with friends and/or families. One side will get burnt."

Our country was built on the freedom of the human spirit. Our forefathers were believers but they realized that allowing the state to determine the manner of their belief was not only what the original pilgrims fled from, it is also tantamount to the path to tyranny.

Which God? The God who demands that women stay at home and have babies? The God who demands that cows not be eaten? The God who champions peace and loving kindness? The God who avenges wrongs and sides with us in wars? The God who is the "only" God? The God who has many manifestations as numerous Gods? The God who would have us delight in sensuality and our humanness? The God who would have us wallow in guilt and in longing for death and freedom from earthly existence? The minute you allow a vague concept of "God" into blatantly public areas in an OFFICIAL sense, you open the door for one religious group or another to push a bit more. My religious values and your, religious or secular, may have common points, but these are not to be promoted by government as religious ones. Our government represents people from all religious backgrounds, or none at all.

Human beings are the most destructive, imperfect and violent creatures on this planet. Animals have far  more innocence because they don't have the ability to conceive wickness, deceit and intentionally devised greed.

We create the racisim, prejudices, discrimination, self rightousness and unnecessary strife among ourselves continuously trying to find ways to find fault with each other in one way or another.

Our very own intelligence will be the eventual cause of our demise simply because we are morally and ethically bankrupt and too weak to find the spiritual strength to better ourselves. Guidance is cetainly there but how many are strong enough to truly grasp and hold on to it.

"In God We Tust" became our motto in 1956 at which time it was mandated that it be used on our currency. It was used prior to that date but was not mandated until 6/30/56. By 1964 it was to printed on paper currency and the old bills were to be taken out of circulation.

The words "One nation under God," added to the Pledge of Alligence became effective in 1954.

As a heretic I'm OK with it. It will take an act of Congress to change it. Right now our country faces a greater challenge in coming up with the money to save our economy not worrying about what's imprinted on it.

If 14% of you feel that stongly about this issue use only the new presidential dollar coins that are known as "Godless Dollars," as there is no imprint of "In God We Trust" on them.

I have a real hard time with being told I can't believe because a small group says so..God is being removed from everything, kids can't pray at school openly, pledge not being said , prayer at games and events takin away.. I am offended that I am being told I can't do these things if I choose..I went to school with Athiest, years and years ago I might add..they didn't care what i believed and weren't made to say prayer, or pledge or even stay in room for parties and never did they complain..I agree everyone has right to believe what they want but noone has the right to take away my right to believe ethier..All the changes in morals and values have really torn this country apart..and Jo is right so many other real issues, stop clogging up courts with dumb stuff!

Kids can pray at school openly, what they can't do is lead a class in prayer.

                                ..pledge not being said..

The pledge is being said all over the nation.

prayer at games and events takin away..

Kids can pray at games and events, but they can't do it over a PA system.

Our government runs everything perfectly. right? do you want them screwing up religion too? Our government needs to leave God alone. It's the only thing in this country they have not detroyed.

Keep religion out of government if you wish to teach it the way you want it tought.

Very right. I wouldn't trust the govt to tie my shoes correctly. In the matter of religion govt doesn't need to screw it up; organized, theistic religions of today are doing a fine job of it themselves.

A case in point might be the irrational denial of the achievements of science in understanding the workings and continuing evolution of God's creation as understood with the intelligence we have been blessed with.

Since the people in Kentucky have called upon God to aid in protecting them may we assume He will get part of the blame if there is a terrorist attack there?

This is such a simple thing that people keep trying to make complex by twisting the fundamental facts.  The Constitution keeps government out of religion, not religion out of government.  That is the basic truth and fact that all decisions on this issue should be based.  There is no "separation of church and state" in the Constitution.  That statement was in a letter written by Jefferson in answer to a specific question.  That letter is NOT a part of the Constitution.  In fact, the Bible was used as a source and a 'reader' in most schools until near the middle of the 20th century.  Madeline Murray 'won' a suit to stop prayer to start each day in school because she was an atheist.  Her son was told he could come to school late each day to miss the prayer if he wanted, but that wasn't enough, she had to shove her position onto every other person, not only in the neighborhood but in the US.  It is a simple fact that the atheists can shove their minority positions onto the majority no matter what.  That isn't right.  If we are to apply that concept 'equally' then McCain should be the new president because the majority wanted Obama.

Buckner said "...God or Mythological creature."  How about that, so he does know there is a God after all.  By his very words.  But it really does not matter if he does not believe there is a God.  His belief does not change the truth.  Buckner can just be thankful that God permits freedom of belief just as our Country permits freedom of speech.  If Buckner cannot be thankful, at the very least, I am thankful in his behalf.

Correction Phil, he said "God or any other mythological creature."  Meaning he looks at god as a mythollogical creature, right up there with unicorns and leprechauns.

First of all, we need to realize that this is Kentucky we are talking about.  Not exactly the hub of the universe.  The backwoods are full of all kinds of bogeymen, ghosts, and assorted monsters.  Apparently, having a rabbits foot is not quite enough to make them feel safe.  Bring on the heavy artillery.  There is nothing quite like a big dose of superstition to make us feel protected.

I have another suggestion as an inscription for that plaque: (thanks William!)

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
                                      Fillet of a fenny snake,   In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,  Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,   Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,   Like a hell-broth boil and bubble

First of all, I am from Kentucky.  Not all of Kentucky is "backwoods".  Also I am a Christian.  While I am not sure what I think about God being writen on the wall in some office in Frankfort, I do use my religion to feel safe.  I know God does not protect me from fires, floods, acts of violence, car wrecks, plane wrecks, train wrecks or any other kind of dangers.  I do know that God will protect me from fearing what happens afterwards.  I may die and go to heaven, or I may live and learn from what happens to me.  Please note that while you are putting down all of Kentucky, you are also putting down Abraham Lincoln, who was born here.  Again don't put all of Kentucky in one word just as you wouldn't put all of United States in one word.  I can't help but wonder if they wouldn't have put "acts of God" but "acts of Mother Nature", if there would still be anything being said.  Do you question "Mother Nature" or is it just nature?

If you don't like a sign don't read it. This crap is nuts and ties up courts for crap. It's time we stop all this kind of crap and pull together to keep our nation strong. Please people the pledge of allegations say one nation under god do we have to change that to keep a few happy come on find something to do with your time. The "under God" part of the pledge (which as a whole is only about 100 years old) was added in the 1950s as a poke in the eye to communism.

Your overall thought seems to be that the vast majority of us all think the same way, so those who think differently should just keep their mouths shut and protest to themselves.  With that kind of "thinking," you'd better hope that the majority never changes its mind.

Or we could just protect everyone's right to his or her own beliefs, and keep the government neutral in the matter.  THAT is the American way.

Please don't try to use facts to back up your argument. They will just be tossed out with all other legitimate logical and rational thought.

Its funny how when religious people try to debunk evolution they say its just a theory and is fallible because humans are fallible and blah blah blah... but then they blindly follow a fairy tale because they are convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that it's real. Its insane.

DeadhandTaxes-- interesting to me is that the creationist/ ID camp tries to use scientific arguments in their campaign against evolution. Shouldn't faith be enough, in that respect?

Cindy, if you have a problem with the separation of church and state, take a moment to think about some of the societies where there is no such separation. For example, Saudi Arabia. Do we want America to be more like that, or less? How does a society like that treat religious minorities (such as Christians and Jews) and non-believers? The separation of church and state protects everyone. It's a sound principal - let's respect it, and let's question the motives of politicians who play games with it.

The Flaw with an Organized Religion is that Flawed Man Organized it. I truly understand why some people get turned off to the point of Atheism...There is nothing like a Sanctimonious Person who has the ear of a "God" as though "God"  skip over everyone else except that person.

Conversely, Deism can be a belief in deity absent any doctrinal governance or precise definition of the nature of such deity. Deism can be similar to naturalism. Therefore, Deism will often give credit to the formation of life and universe to a higher power that by design allows only natural processes to govern creation.

As in all things Earthly are made up of Matter. Matter never dies it just changes FORM.

It's basically blaming God if we can't keep ourselves safe, like a built-in excuse if the government screws up. For me, it diminishes the role of God in my life to that of protector for selected people.

Remember that Katrina happened not because of a dilapidated levy system and a huge hurricane; it was punishment for the debauchery that went on in New Orleans. Magic!

God does not control us but will lead us safely if we're humble enough to listen to the Spirit.  Those not willing to be lead will suffer the consequences of their choices.  This life is a test and any test worth anything will not be passed by all.  Those wanting to pretend that they actually control their life, etc. will find that the only 'control' they have is being responsible for their actions.

We are at war now, and probably will be for generations to come, because of religious differences. This is turning out to be a war between Christians and Muslims.

It's a proven fact that all of the stories in the bible(and stories they are) were stolen from earlier mesopotamian religions, the gardeb of eden, the great flood, etc. I could go all day long with this ,but somehow I don't think you'll listen.

Please don't give me the standard reply about it being someone who doesn't believe in God. What do you think an A-Theist is? Can you tell us what a theist is? At the very least you should have a handle on the basis for your beliefs.

I pasted it because obviously it was to long to retype...However if you care to REALLY READ IT you will see...That ATHEIST BEN FRANKLIN preferred Science to God.

On this Independence Day, as we pay annual homage to the Declaration of Independence for which Thomas Jefferson gets most of the credit for authoring, let's not forget the signal contribution made by Benjamin Franklin -- entrepreneur, scientist, diplomat, statesman and, apparently, wordsmith.

If not for Franklin, one of the most famous parts of the Declaration would likely read, "We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable."

Franklin, a member of the Continental Congress committee charged with creating the document, had a better idea. He crossed out the words "sacred and undeniable" and substituted "self-evident."

You can see the actual draft declaration, with Franklin's edit, here

Walter Isaacson, in his Franklin biography, explains how the amply padded founding father and Renaissance man arrived at "self-evident."

The idea of "self-evident" truths was one that drew less on John Locke, who was Jefferson's favored philosopher, than on the scientific determinism espoused by Isaac Newton and on the analytic empiricism of Franklin's close friend David Hume. In what became known as "Hume's fork," the great Scottish philosopher, along with Leibniz and others, had developed a theory that distinguished between synthetic truths that describe matters of fact (such as "London is bigger than Philadephia") and analytic truths that are self-evident by virtue of reason and definition ("The angles of a triangle equal 180 degrees"; "All bachelors are unmarried"). By using the word "sacred," Jefferson had asserted, intentionally or not, that the principle in question--the equality of men and their endowment by their creator with inalienable rights--was an assertion of religion. Franklin's edit turned it instead into an assertion of rationality."

This may be one of the few times in history that a committee actually improved on the final product.

Jesus and God may be one and the same for you, but not for those of many faiths found in America. Certainly "God" and "Creator" were mentioned by our founders, and it would be one thing if all such references to God in a government setting were limited to the generic. Your statement shows however that this would not be the case. "God" for millions of Americans would = "Jesus", which = Christian. We would have a defacto theocracy, a Christian government over a Christian people, put in place by folks like you who would twist the generic into the specific, believing that it is God's will that all be Christians.

I have often wondered why God would send his messenger to an obscure backwater of the Roman Empire already peopled by those with an ancient history and what they believed to be a unique covenant with God? The vast majority of people on earth at the time probably lived in India and China. Why not send his son to one of those places to have the greatest impact?

Even more importantly, why didn't God send His daughter AND His son?

Finally, the origin of Christianity is based on its role as a sect for Jews within Judaism, much as Christians might wish to avoid the fact. The Christian hatred for the founders of their own religion is a sight to behold.

He did not like organized religion. If you are a teacher of history you scare me.      He wrote a plan of 13 virtues and The very last one is Humility...Imitate JESUS and  SOCRATES.. He was not an ATHEIST.

Ben's motto was Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to GOD

Second, things were going along fine until the christ freaks started telling the rest of the world how to be religious. They started a fight that was not there. Why? Because of their limited thinking ability which leads to their insecurity which manifests in their weaken state of inferiority. We elites believed, in the past, this was harmless. Children and their blanket. But we forgot they can vote. Can't take the vote away, darn! So now they have to be confronted.

The First Amendment contains two clauses regarding religion: one protects the free exercise of religion, and the other prohibits the establishment of a state religion, as in Saudi Arabia or Iran. Reasonable people can certainly disagree about the application of those two principals to specific situations, but the principals have basically served us well, and we should take them seriously.

Keithsn you so arrogant. When did I ever say that the Christian way is the only way. I was merely saying that every time an atheist sees the word God they always cry out to a lawyer. Stop trying to sue the whole world.

If you do not believe in God then why are you so mad that the word God is present. If you are an atheist then the word God should mean nothing to you, so therefore what makes God so much worse than any other word?

Catholic Church and Christians are not the same thing sorry to disappoint you my little heathen friend

It has been self-proclaimed Christians here whining about the imminent downfall of America if we take God out of America. Your accusation of Chicken Little is laughable in that context.

The problems that we are having in America are because of us Americans. And people who like to sue everyone, like your atheists for example.

I do not believe that if I pray to God that America will be saved. However, I do believe people like YOU who think that the government owes you something.

Actually if you read Mein Kampf you would know that Hitler criticized the Catholic Church in its political form, which he said failed to recognize Germany’s and Europe’s “racial problem”.

Jack I am waiting for you to post something that doesn't revolve around the Chicken Little theory.

How does demonizing another's opinion, as well as the person, square with the teachings of Jesus? And I don't mean the pick and choose variety of Jesus's teachings, try the whole context.

Hey some people do HAIL SATAN. Doesn't mean I have to believe it. Belief is personal. Let it be. I abhor the taste of any alcoholic or fruity  beverages. But I'm not going to file a lawsuit because some sign says it's smooth tasting and i don't agree with it.

Does me no harm to hear it, hear other people say it, to have to read it, and if it was part of Washington State Law, who am I ( as a citizen of Washington ) to really be bothered by it?

Try READING it sometime before you complain that something is 'unconstitutional'.  Furthermore, an 'Atheist' does not believe in the existence of God...so why get upset about something that, according to them, doesn't exist in the first place? Would people get upset if there was a creed, or a law, which invoked Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny? I doubt it. If you don't believe in God, then just let it go...let those of us who do enjoy our fellowship with Him. It can't be 'forced down anyone's throats'...because if you actually take time to READ the Bible, you'll find it's a matter of individual choice. Just let it go...and one day, the truth will be clear to everyone. Just be patient! Love you guys...

Religion is not forced down anyone's throat.  Abortion and gay rights are both matters of morality.  Since abortion is killing of a human being it is no surprise that religion does not support it.  Since we value the relationship of a man and wife as important and natural - it is no surprise that the unnatural act of a man with a man would not be acceptable in a religious setting.

I guess I do not understand your point.  If you are religious and speak out against these matters then you are forcing your opinion on someone. But if you speak out in favor fo these things you are ????

If you want all morals to go away then be careful what you wish for - because they all evolved from religion.  It is part of what makes us civilized.  If I wanted to hit you over the head with a bat and take your car then I should be able to do that as long as it did not violate my morality who are you to force your morality on me and tell me this is wrong.  Is this what you are saying?  I mean you can't just stop at the abortion and gay rights argument with your logic of not dictating someone else's morality.  If you mean that then a logical extension to other moral issues should require the same conclusion.

Religion is a very big part of what separates us from the animals and what allows us to be civilized.  You may not like it but it is true.

I don't understand what the irrational fear is all about.

I think my dog appears to be fairly aware of itself.  Does my dog know that he is going to die at some point?  I do not know.   I have had other dogs that went to secluded spot away from everyone when they passed away.  Did they seclude themselves because they just wanted to be alone OR did they know they were dying.

What I do know is that my dog does what he wants to do with little regard to whether that is good for someone else.  If he is strong enough to be Alpha dog then his wish is everyone elses command.  His social environment is made up of power - the strongest is Alpha and he rules.

Our society is made up of rules that are not based on power but on morals and compassion for others.  These developed from religion and a belief in God.  Take God out of the picture and I am not sure that we are not a society ruled by physical power only.

Theistic to me is just a way to make God out to what is acceptable to you.  God is what he is.  Whether acceptable to you or not.  We do not make God - it is the other way around.  The biggest problem with God is that it brings rules - right and wrong - morals to the table.  Humans are much more comfortable when we make the rules ourselves.

I have no irrational fear of science.  I see an irrational fear of scientist.  There is just as much to support the evolution theory as the creation theory.  In fact the evolution theory presumes that humans evolved on earth - maybe we came from somewhere else.  Maybe we did in fact evolve just as Darwin suggested.  Either way - God is not explained away.  When I bake a cake I do not build each piece of the cake - i put in the ingredients and bake it.  Then an hour later out comes a cake that looks nothing like the ingredients that I put in the oven.  My problem with science is when it becomes its own religion.  Religion is at its very heart based on faith.  Science is supposed to be based on fact only not on a guess or an unproved theory.

there's nothing wrong with religion. our constitution used religious/moral beliefs to support an argument for freedoms we enjoy today.  however - imposition of intolerant religious views in the past was the very reason the constitution carefully included a freedom for the individual to choose how to celebrate religion - the constitution did not say how we should talk to God or imply in any way that one religion is the only way to go.    It is to be a personal choice not influenced by social conditioning or excessive social pressure.

PS - the "under God" thing was added to the pledge of allegiance in the 1940's or 1950's (I don't recall the specific date).  This country was certainly as Christian before it was added - the words themselves carry no extra weight.   The mafia went to church on Sundays, but displayed no greater morality during the week.

Folks ought to drop all this God in the government chatter.   Fundamentalist religious countries, like this one, Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq have one thing in common - this narrow and radical injection of religion into all corners of lfe is what is holding us all back.   We each should pursue our own morality with fervor, and respect the beliefs of others.

It is a major mistake to impose one view on others.  It is also a major mistake to justify killing and discrimination in the name of God.  He must be weary of all the bloodshed in His name.

I doubt that morals came first and then a belief in God was made up to support those morals.  What would have been the reason to have morals?  Morals put others needs in front of our own - this is certainly not a natural state of mind.  Our natural state of mind is to worry only about ourselves - survive.  It is a belief in God that calls us to resist this natural state.  Without a belief in God there would be no reason to even have morals.

As others have stated, the phrase comes from a letter sent by Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists. Now what I heard on this letter was that the Baptists had gotten word that the government was going to establish Congregational Church as a national religion, which of course had the Baptists upset (and I'm sure others too). The idea of seapration of church and state had to do with the fact that the government would never establish a national religion as England had done with the Church of England.
Unfortunately, just as people have interepreted the Bible according to their own agendas, so have they interpreted this letter and made it into all sorts of things that it isn't.

We were founded on freedom of the individual not the force ways of the majority.

You must do objective research for yourself if you have any interest in knowing whereof you speak.
