Possible trade rep. pick linked to pardon uproar

advertisement

The Calif. congressman in discussions to become Barack Obama's U.S. trade representative played a role in President Clinton's commuting the prison sentence of a cocaine dealer.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

this is quickly starting to look bad for administration.

What's up with the comment in article that "Republicans resurrected the pardon of Rich involving Holder"? Why do Republicans HAVE to resurrect it? Why the hell isn't media doing their job?

I'd agree full inquiry should occur during the hearings. But in Holder's case, there's not much mystery here. He made a rash decision in the closing hours of the administration. He acknowledged it was a decision he should have considered more carefully.

The Becerra issue is being blasted out by big corp interests who fear he's too labor friendly. Goes to show just how big a hand on the levers Big Corporations still have in Congress.

I kind if hope Holder does what Ashcroft, Gonzalez, and Mukasey did during their confirmation hearings. Just refuse to answer everything and he'll pass on a party line vote.

Republicans deserve that after the hell they've put this country through.

This is way too funny on so many levels.

First, where are the leftists who ranted about Bush pardoning a crackhead.  They never seem to learn a dem somewhere has done so much worse.  In this case their boy Bubba sold a pardon to a major freakin smuggler!  800 pounds!  And thats all he was caught with!  You know the guy moved so much more.

This guy Bobby Bacala, oops i mean Xavier Becerra (sorry 'bout that, I keep confusing these dems with Soprano characters) is obviously in somebodies pocket.  Who is he beholden to?  What do you need - how much $ you got?  Lets see, voted for NAFTA but regretted it.  Opposed the Central American Free Trade Agreement, but supports the Peru trade deal.  Wonder who he owes, and where he'll be lining his pockets from?  Yeah, hes a guy to put in charge.   Of a cellblock maybe.  Lets watch the media gloss over him now.

And as far as Holder, noted in this article, the media needs to note his work for FARC.  Nobody cares about Marc Rich.  He was just another pardon bought from Clinton.  Freeing terrorists is much more interesting.

Obama nominee received  $ 15,000.00 donation from family of a major drug dealer ( in prison for an 800 pound cocaine deal .

    Why ?

Wanted a Bill Clinton get out of prison for a fee card.

The nominee also requested help from Hillary Rodham Clintons brother ( who, was to get

$ 200,000.00 for influencing William Jefferson Blyth Clinton to give the drug dealer a pardon ).

    WOW !

    Obama the " C H A N G E " candidate selecting winners from the Clinton White House years.

Obama and cocaine ---- something to watch during the nomination process in Congress.

Rally Around Democrats--- just like you did in the Clinton Administration.

    Becerra isn't an Obama nominee.

It's a speculation, about a potential candidate.  He's a potential candidate because he has an expertise in the field he's being considered for.

I'm confident that when the decision is to be made by Obama, not the media, you or I, the right decision will be made!

My only question is "If Becerra isn't selected by Obama will that change your mind set"?

I think not and that's healthy!

Becera is being discussed because  of the lack of Hispanics in Obama cabinet so far....OBAMA has a rational quota to fill.

            1. This position isn't subject to election or nomination, it is strictly an appointment.
            2. We elected a drug addict and alcoholic as President, this seems to fit the bill.

Paul, you least of all should not talk about Obama that way. It was only a little coke in college.

                    What are you, 12?

                  • In December 1966 (age 20), he was arrested for disorderly conduct after he and some friends had "a few beers" and stole a Christmas wreath from a hotel. The charges were later dropped.
                  • On September 4, 1976 (age 30), Bush was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol near his family's summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine. He admitted his guilt, was fined US$150, and had his driving license in the state suspended for two years, although the White House had claimed 30 days. This incident did not become public knowledge until it was reported in the press in the week before the 2000 election.
                  • The most notorious episode, reported in numerous diverse sources including U.S. News & World Report on November 1, 1999, Secrecy & Privilege: Rise of the Bush Dynasty from Watergate to Iraq by Robert Parry, First Son: George W. Bush and the Bush Family Dynasty by Bill Minutaglio, and W: Revenge of the Bush Dynasty by Elizabeth Mitchell, has 26-year-old George W. Bush visiting his parents in Washington, D.C. over the Christmas vacation in 1972, shortly after the death of his grandfather, and taking his 16-year-old brother Marvin out drinking. On the way home George lost control of the car and ran over a waste container, but continued home with the garbage can wedged noisily under the car. When his father, George H. W. Bush, called him on the carpet for not only his own behavior but for exposing his younger brother to risk, George W., still under the influence, appears to have retorted angrily, "I hear you're looking for me. You wanna go mano-a-mano right here?"
                  • A conversation between Bush and an old friend and author, Doug Wead, touched on the subject of use of illegal drugs. In the taped recordings of the conversation, Bush explained his refusal to answer questions about whether he had used marijuana at some time in his past. "I wouldn't answer the marijuana questions," Bush says. "You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried." When Wead reminded Bush that the latter had publicly denied using cocaine, Bush replied, "I haven't denied anything."
                  • In February 2004, Eric Boehlert in Salon magazine claimed that Bush's cessation of flying in April 1972 and his subsequent refusal to take a physical examination came at the same time the Air Force announced a Medical Service Drug Abuse Testing Program, which, he wrote, was officially launched on April 21, 1972. He further claimed that while the drug testing took years to implement, "as of April 1972, Air National guardsmen knew random drug testing was going to be implemented."
                  • Drunk driving, tanking a minor out to drink, and ditching flying once he would have had to take drug tests.

Yeah, I think it's deadly clear who I'm talking about: the man that ruined this country over the past eight years. Everything makes just a little more sense now, doesn't it.

Paul, are you saying Bush is a drug addict?  With what you posted as the "evidence"?  Mighty thin speculation.

I only wish the media had been half as thorough with researching Barack as they have been with "others".  And remember diWi's weren't the same then as they are now.  I know many who were simply told to go home, dump out your opens, or call a ride.  Heck, I've heard of someone bouncing off a bridge abutment into the water, killing someone and walking away scot-free.

BTW, I'd like to know who the tee-toters are in Congress, or past Pres.  If there are any, thats a mighty short list.

Obama networking with? What a joke. At least the Democrats took the high road and didn't bring up McCains "networking" with his good friend, the political terrorist G. Gordon Liddy, who admitted he would have killed anyone who hindered his operations.

I don't see a positive spin either, realistically his expertise just isn't enough to compensate.

He says, all I did was ask Clinton to review the case.  I would assume he would say he has no control over who donates what and how much...

Obama has made some solid decisions thus far, I would expect he will make the right decision here as well.

Keep in mind, he is a potential pick because of his expertise.

This just shows what an incestuous bunch this Washington family is. Even our fresh face for change. There is just no escaping it, it's woven in the fiber of these politicians. They are all nasty, and stink.

Yep, since we finally managed to elect an adult to lead this country, now we can go back to living our lives instead of worrying how or when Bush is going to get us all killed. And we did get change: Bush out, Obama in. Republicans out, Democrats in.

Now that's change I can believe in.

What is there to defend, the guy is a potential candidate because of his expertise, who said Obama was even considering him?

He's made good solid decisions so far... Honestly, after the last eight years any choice Obama makes of someone that has 1/10th of a percent of common sense is an improvement!

It may not be the best as "you can't please everyone all of the time", but that's not what's at stake here.  What's at stake is shifting job creation to the Americas and away from Asia.

This appointed cabinet member will have to bring jobs back to Mexico & the US.  It's tricky because the cheaper labor is South of our border, but even that will create jobs in the US for suppliers, transporters, warehouses, DC's, assembly, etc.

That has to be the focus!

Every time they turn over a stinking politician, all you see are more shady dealings by the great Bill Clinton.

No one is talking about where they are going to have to violate the Constitution Section 1, Article 6.  To place Hillary Clinton as the next Secretary of State.  But the knowledgeable Obama will know how the redefine the words, to make it work, just like WJC did  Ha! Ha!

He had more justification to go into Iraq than he had to go into Afghanistan.

& really anyway you slice it - pardoning a convicted criminal doesn't have a good spin anyway you look at it!  I'm certain that the justice system isn't perfect... but jeez.  That list is just another justification of why Obama was elected!!!!

AC: How can you say that he had more justification to go into Iraq?!? WMD which were not there & many in the intellegence community he's now trying to throw under the bus TOLD him were not there vs. going after Osama Bin Ladin, who was based in Afghanistan. Hmmm... Yup, sounds like he had PERFECT justification to go to Iraq over Afghanistan.

And by the way, Ayers is a non-issue. The majority of Americans have decided that the side-show distraction of a tenuous relationship with Ayers wasn't important. It's about the economy and getting this nation back on track, not about someone Obama knows from Chicago. I don't see any uproar about McCain's relationship with G. Gordon Liddy or Bush's family relationship with Bin Ladin's family is Saudi Arabia, so get off it already!

Paul. Funny....LA TIMES had an editorial yesterday discussing the lack of pardons from BUSH ADMIN...and how CLinton  used the pardon way to much and how GW might not be using enough...

Also, most of those people you cite with your DNC provided talking point list  are over a decade old after being convicted.....they were convicted did their time and moved on to productive lives.....  They were not  FUGITIVES like Rich and were not  half way through  14 year terms in prison. like the guy Becera  helped.

Paul  your so efficient  Of all the liberal hacks and Obama sheep  who use this board  you are the best at posting the  DNC TALKING POINTS.....after all posting and repeating  party line talking posts....much quicker and easier then thinking for your self

funny hearing a lib/dem condemn someone for drug experimentation in college in the 60s...pot calling the kettle black? especially for mary jane...what is it the left says? it doesn't affect anyone but the one who uses it. it's harmless. victimless 'crime'.

his pardons were not bought for, like clinton's, nor for tax evasion. most presidents give pardons for drug convictions based on individual circumstances. who was this "terrorist" though?  never heard of him.

The power to pardon was given to the president so that he could pardon those who engaged in and promoted insurrection in the early stages of this nation's history. It was decided at that time the pardons should not be subject to discussion by or confirmation by Congress as it would cause political problems, lengthen any insurrections and take up too much of the country's time. It was a wide decision.

As for Hillary, she slipped through the cracks in White Water and probably other involvements. She should be in jail if she’s guilty, or, since she’s probably an untouchable, at least put out to pasture where she can’t do as much damage.

Republicans had blind faith in the Idiot they voted into office (a man who did cocaine (more than once) and was an alcoholic, whose wife asked him to choose between Jim Beam and her at one point in their marriage...a man who graduated due to daddy's money and served miserably in the armed forces)..twice....and look where that got us. So to have a republican question what President Elect Obama does or does not do, who he selects and why he selects them and any other decisions he makes is just dead air to me. Republicans have proven that they will vote an imbecile into the most powerful office in the world and then back him no matter how horrid the things he does are or who it hurts so it shows me that their ability to think clearly and make well thought out decisions and see right from wrong and choose right is somehow terribly broken..........like our country is now. So President Elect Obama has my trust and support until such time as he proves he is no longer deserving of it.............now it is the Democrats turn to have faith.........lets see if we do better than the republicans. President Elect Obama makes his decisions only after a great deal of deliberation with a lot of imput from incredibly smart people who surround him...................George just picked a name out of a jar or said "a higher power" was involved. Intelligent people in the White House............never thought we'd see that again.
