Wow, what a stupid individual. I hope he doesn't get out anytime soon. Sounds like he uses people for everything they're worth and then moves onto someone else.

We had a guy do this in our church.  He stole money out of the secretary's desk and a really nice personally owned microphone... mine.

Makes more sense in a church, though... strange he didn't ask for help.  He was already doing odd jobs now and then and he was a young nice charismatic boy.  I guess he thought he could and would take more.

But a personal home!  This is down right creepy.  Things like these will happen more and more as our economy and world crumble as we know it.

If I shared an attic with neighbors I would probably have a lock on the entry.

Creepy though.  Sounds like the plot of a horror novel.

That family is very fortunate that he didn't turn out to be some kind of psychotic killer.  He had easy access to them anytime he wanted to do them harm.  Thankfully, he did not want anything other than food, clothes and some electronic equipment!  It is entirely creepy though that he went unnoticed for several days.  Perhaps now the family will take more precautionary measures to block off and lock the connecting door!!!!

      NRA Pete

JoMan is right. As the gap widens between the haves and the have-nots, and the have-nots dont want to work for it, this problem will get worse. So, do the right thing, take an NRA safety course, get your pistol permit, learn how to protect yourself and your property, and shoot the bastard in your house. This lazy moron is really lucky that he didnt break into my house. And hurry up before Hillary, Obama, and Schumer get their claws into the second amendment!!

I am an staunch NRA supporter, and I have to say NRA Pete you are the type that gives us all a bad name.  This deranged individual doesn't need to be shot. An evaluation...yes.  The home owner handled it properly, and without shooting him.  No where does the NRA believe that you can take on the law by yourself, so sit back and take it easy before you get your guns taken away by your own bad behavior.

If he was smart he could have sponged off them for a long time without them even knowing about it. I don't understand how the duplex had a shared attic unless it was converted from a single home.

FYI....My husband and I lived in a 105 year old twin ( always a twin, never a single family home) and once you opened acces to the attic ( it was just rafters and added insulation, it was clear open all the way across, so over our neighbors as well, also worrisome, there was no firewall protection; remember 105 year old structure...

Could have been an older duplex built before codes required fire wall seperation.

It's sad, actually. Not a violent crime. But we don't know this guy's history. Jail may not be the best place for him. Need to know more about him before I can make a definite opinion. As usual, reporting is lacking.

What find strange is this is the second case of this I have heard of.  I believe that last year a similar crime happened in Japan and the person was living in a closet.  Pretty sure it was Japan. Too right that the family was lucky.

Don't need to be reading this at night (nor my Sig especially), made me go check MY attic.  Does sound like the beginning of a horror movie or campfire tale.  Got the feeling I'm going to be checking out alot more "house settling" noises the next few weeks.

Ok i just totally locked up every last window in my house. This article reminds me of an old horror movie or two, except the movies didn't end up with happy endings. Thank goodness I don't have an attic.

I'm with Vandmyshadow on this one...creepy!!!  Thank God this guy wasn't some killer or something or this would have been even worse with a much creepier ending than a Christmas list.  Geez I understand that homelessness is an issue and you can't just live on the streets, especially in cold places, but ASK FOR HELP from a church or something...don't go crawling around in another person's home taking their clothes and iPods!!  For goodness sake!

It's weird because, they asked him to leave and when he did they made a missing persons report out.  If he was homeless after they said get out,  then why were they looking for him.  Kind of cruel to throw someone out right before Christmas in the cold.

He was surviving and I guess being in the attic all those hours he needed some entertainment to pass the time.  A laptop and ipod makes sense.

Well, I guess now he will have 3 hot meals and a bed for sure.

It's hard to pass judgement when you don't know why and what kind of a person he really is.

When I was young my dad was a building contractor and he found a young man sleeping in his chicken coope bundled up in the hay in the winter. He asked him why he was there and he said he was homeless and had no job food or money. My dad took him in the house and fed him braekfast. He then took him out and got him workclothes and put him to work as a labourer. He worked for him for 2 years , and when he left he came back to visit him 5 years later with a gift , driving a new car, wearing a suit and thanked my dad for not giving up on him as everyone else in his life had done. He had a good job with a marketing firm and said he owed all of it to my dad. I know I wouldn't have jumped to the gun immediately and called the cops. My dad who is know 86 taught me one thing in life........ compassion.

I'm happy that your story ended up the way it did. Too many times we hear of people helping out a stranger this way only to end up being robbed or worse. Compassion is great but be cautiously compassionate.
