In his February 10 Washington Times column, titled "End of the Constitution: Obamacare birth-control mandate would defeat the First Amendment," Jeffrey Kuhner called President Obama "an anti-Christian, anti-religious bigot" whose "goal is to purge Christianity from civil society, to marginalize religion from the public square." Kuhner's attack is in response to the president's announcement that he would require most employers to cover contraceptives for women. President Obama later announced an accommodation in which insurance companies would directly offer contraception coverage to employers who have religious objection to such coverage.

I believe that people who lie without conscience are called sociopaths. I sincerely hope that Kuhner's family break through to him and get him the medical help he needs to function normally again, to rejoin society.
But for the time being, it hardly seems appropriate for a any paper, even a known hate site like the Washington Times, to employ someone with mental health issues. Perhaps letting him go will begin the healing process, to show him that he's not just being a partisan idiot, but really needs help with his problems.

Paul, I agree this much hate and the hate that is being promoted in this country is a mental illness. Yet Paul you have me a little confused with this article. First I was told he was a member of Reverend Wright's church which is Christian. Then I was told he was an atheist. Then I was told he was an Muslim. Now Paul I am being told he is an anti-Christian anti-religious bigot. Can't process all those adjectives. He has had so many religious beliefs during these past two years. I also know adjectives and adverbs are opinion words, opinions of their user.
The right to freedom of religion allows the right to those whose religious or non-religious belief allow contraception. President Obama is not forcing anyone to use contraception. That would be an infringement of Constitutional Rights. It prevents a woman to speak to whether she wishes to be a mother or not. That is an infringement based on gender. President Obama is making it available for those who wish to use it no matter what their religious views are.

Maybe President Obama really is anti-Christian and anti-religious and is trying to use the authority of the state to oppress religionists, especially Christians. So what? Isn't that what many religionists, especially Christians, are trying to do to those who don't share their beliefs? Why is okay for one, but not for the other, and wrong for one but not for the other?
Yes, the President's mandate is flying in the face of anti-birth control religionists and will attempt for force them to do something that goes against their beliefs, as well as the First Amendment (and it'll probably be struck down as un-Constitutional, as it should). And that's got the ultra-fundamentalist religionists all in a tizzy. But how is it different from them trying to use the power of the state to deny people to practice what they want, such as marriage equality?
The government, on all levels, should stay out of religious practices, with some extreme exceptions (no one has the right to toss virgins into volcanoes to appease some god). All religions should stay out of government, with some extreme exceptions (the government can't tell people they're not allowed to use incense in their services [this is just an example] because it violates a "smoke-free" public environment).
As much as I think the responsible use of contraceptives is a good and wise thing, and I desire easy and affordable access to them, it's not up to me as an atheist to tell Catholics or anyone else that they must pay for it for somebody else. If certain birth control methods are too expensive, take it up with the corporate manufacturers that gouge people to make the 1% even wealthier. Go after them. I certainly don't want to be a partisan to stuffing the wallet of some drug company CEO who's already making a seven-or-eight-figure-a-year salary. I see them as more of a threat to birth control access than some piddly Catholic school with an insurance benefit.
And, by the same token, it's not up to Catholics, other Christians, or any religionists to tell me how I'm suppose to live my life, whom I can marry, etc., under the threat of the law because of their beliefs. No one's religion determines my or anyone else's civil, human and Constitutional rights.

One black president, and an all white everyone else government, and they are calling him the bigot.
Seems like we need a 12 step for all the white bigots in government. All we hear is white politicians and repukians bashing the one black man in office.
None of these white politicians have done much for the people or for our country, and all they can do is point their little white fingers at the black man that's trying to clean up all the previous white man's problems and wars they have created.
All the republican needs to look in the mirror and see the real truth in Washington.

President Obama has already found a solution that allows the Catholic Church to pass the cost of birth control (for women employed by their financial enterprises) to the insurance companies. Right wingers can't let the fact that it's now a non-issue get in the way of spreading lies and milking the situation to create divisiveness. The Democratic party has always represented the interests of Catholic families and workers, but now right wing extremists are seeking a wedge to separate Catholics from the party that works to benefit them. Barack Obama is a publically confessed Christian, and lives his faith, so why would he be anti Christian, anti religion? Also, why would anybody read a rag like the Wash. RCC is just a washed up government heirarchy that used to control and influence a large part of the modern world; and now that it's relegated to little more than an archaic curiosity in the heart of Italy with little or no direct control of modern nations, it's pathetically attempting to flex its atrophied muscles through this 'revival' of ignorance in the United States.
Don't be complacent, though. Ignorance is easily established, and there are leaders within this country working hard at ensuring such. It took centuries of struggle and the Enlightenment to bring us out of the Dark Ages and the Church's control - but it seems that those lessons learned by our forefathers are slowly being forgotten and marginalized by those who wish to regress our nation and culture.

In trying to shove this down the throats of Catholics and others who have an anti-birth control stance, he has violated his oath of office which entails upholding the constitution. The issue here is the oft cited "seperation of church and state" Obama has clearly crossed the line.
And yet his proposal is already status quo in many parts; i.e., not much will/should change.
Twenty-eight states already require that health insurance plans cover contraception; eight states do not even exempt churches from that requirement, as the Obama administration’s rules would, even before the president announced an expanded religious exemption on Friday. New York, whose Catholic archbishop has railed so vehemently against the administration on this issue, already lives under the rule he decries — it’s state law. The rule is also partially enshrined in federal law thanks to a December 2000 ruling of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. More than a dozen congressional Republicans proposed that this same rule become federal law in 2001, to a furious outcry from precisely no one.
Emphases mine.

The President didn't cross the line. If you read the law, it does as much to maintain separation of church and state, as well as religious freedoms.

We cannot allow this to happen; the next thing is the religious nuts will want all of the control (they already want the control but we won't allow it). They don't pay taxes as it is, which should not be tolerated at all.

This was a brief summary of the column. It said much more and people should read it:
Is America sliding toward autocratic rule? This is the essential question of Barack Obama’s presidency. Mr. Obama vowed to “fundamentally transform” the United States. Despite his incompetence and economic failure, the president is making good on his central promise: the destruction of our constitutional republic. He is trying - piece by painful piece - to reverse the legacy of the Founding Fathers. Conservatives have underestimated him at their peril. For Mr. Obama is not simply an inept, liberal president in the mold of Jimmy Carter. He is an ideological revolutionary who seeks to sweep away traditional America.
The American war of independence did not just overthrow British imperial domination. The Founders forged something almost unique in history: a nation devoted to individual liberty, Christian civilization and federalism. The rule of men was replaced bythe rule of law. The linchpin was constitutional government based on the separation of powers and checks and balances. The American system is entirely predicated on the Constitution. Once the Constitution becomes meaningless or just an inconvenient piece of paper, the American experiment is over. The republic is dead.
This is what’s at stake. Mr. Obama is acting like an arbitrary tyrant. He is running roughshod over the Constitution, egregiously, repeatedly and deliberately violating its restraints and clear limits on federal power. He has publicly admitted that he finds Congress a nuisance, an “obstacle” to his secular socialist project. He has said that he often thinks about “going it alone.” In fact, this is what he has done - so far, largely with impunity.
He waged an illegal war in Libya. The last time Congress officially declared war was in December 1941. Yet Mr. Obama went one step further, something his predecessors - Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush - never did: He refused even to ask Congress for authorization. Mr. Obama ignored the War Powers Act, flagrantly circumventing congressional authority.
Moreover, late last year, the massive National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was signed into law, which potentially allows for the military - not domestic courts - to indefinitely detain American citizens suspected of ties to terrorism. The vaguely worded NDAA undermines the rule of law and due process, enabling the government to abrogate the fundamental right to trial. It lends itself to abuse of state power - the very thing our Founders warned against. In the wrong hands, the NDAA could be used as a weapon to persecute - and imprison - political opponents under the guise of fighting terrorism. This is the same administration that has lumped anti-abortion and anti-illegal-immigration activists with radical Islamists as possible “threats” to national security.
Yet it is not just national security. Mr. Obama has created countless policy czars possessing Cabinet-like powers without the approval or consent of the Senate. Recently, he appointed Richard Cordray to be the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - despite the fact that he lacked needed support in the Senate. Mr. Obama’s response: Take a hike. He parachuted in Mr. Cordray as a recess appointment even though Congress was not in recess. The president has usurped congressional oversight - a clear and dangerous violation of the Constitution.
His greatest assault, however, is on religious freedom. Fortunately, his latest effort sparked a rebellion. Mr. Obama had declared war not just on the Catholic Church, but on the First Amendment. The administration ordered almost all religious organizations to provide health insurance coverage that includes free birth control and sterilization procedures - even the morning-after pill, which can induce abortions. Otherwise, under Obamacare, Catholic hospitals, charities and universities would face major fines totaling millions of dollars. The choice was clear: Catholic institutions must either abandon their fundamental tenets or go bankrupt. The contraceptive mandate denied the conscience rights of the church. It was state-sanctioned coercion of private entities to act against their explicit religious beliefs. This is why it triggered such furor among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. If such basic liberties could be trampled on, then nothing - and no one - is safe from big government’s crushing grip. Fortunately, a three-week outcry forced him to back off.
Like many on the radical left, Mr. Obama is an anti-Christian, anti-religious bigot. His goal is to purge Christianity from civil society, to marginalize religion from the public square. He essentially told the church that Washington, not the Vatican, will dictate how it must run its affairs and administer its social services. He demanded that Catholics sacrifice their beliefs on the altar of secular liberalism. The state - with him at its helm - is the new pagan church. Women’s “reproductive health care” trumps Catholic positions on birth control and abortion. The fact that most health insurers already cover contraception and that it is widely available and accessible to women - just go to your local Walgreens - means nothing to feminists or the powerful abortion lobby. The real aim is to smash the Catholic Church as a bulwark against the sexual revolution, reducing it to a quisling of the liberal regime.
Catholic leaders rightly stood up. The Church understood it was under siege. That may not be over. Mr. Obama could win a second term. Hence, Obamacare - along with its contraceptive mandate - might not be repealed and may even expand. If so, he will have succeeded in giving birth to his Frankenstein monster: a post-constitutional, post-American soft tyranny.

So far, we have 3 years of on the job training in economics, military. Not much success at all. Two surges in Afghan, no indictments of wall streeters rigging bonds, banks passing them off using purchased ratings, and trading the bush tax cut extension for one year of extended unemployment benefits that have now run out.
The last is the root cause of dramatic lowering of unemployment rate being praised. Good news is that jobs are opening up, alas, years late. I do not blame Obama for the 2008 bubble crash. I do not blame Obama for all of the slow recovery. Suggest he is in campaign mode, lots of talk and promises.

DBE928- I read until the first outright blatant lie.
Despite his incompetence and economic failure, the president is making good on his central promise: the destruction of our constitutional republic.
When you can show me Pres. Obama promising the destruction of our constitutional republic I'll read more. Otherwise, I'm not wasting my time.

I should delete #13 for clear copyright infringement, but since there's a discussion under it, I'll leave it be.
Don't do it again.

If you were to delete #13 it should be because it's a load of ignorant, hypocritical, unapologetically misleading lies. Don't believe me?
Despite his incompetence and economic failure,
No proof, no justification, nothing of value in this statement.
This is what’s at stake. Mr. Obama is acting like an arbitrary tyrant. He is running roughshod over the Constitution, egregiously, repeatedly and deliberately violating its restraints and clear limits on federal power.
That is absolutely ridiculous. At no point in time has Obama done anything that was prohibited by the Constitution; he has not overstepped any of the boundaries placed on the office of the President.
He has publicly admitted that he finds Congress a nuisance,
They ARE a nuisance! Whenever he tries to get something done, the do-nothing Republicans attack him and filibuster, trying to prevent anything from happening.
an “obstacle” to his secular socialist project.
Anyone who thinks Obama is a socialist knows absolutely nothing about what socialism is and nothing about what Obama has actually done in office. And the "secular" part is a compliment. The Founding Fathers who this article's writer seems to loves so much specifically set up our government as an entirely secular one.
He has said that he often thinks about “going it alone.” In fact, this is what he has done - so far, largely with impunity.
If he DIDN'T try to get something done without Congress's nonexistent help, he would have been criticized for doing nothing. He can't win with the neocons.
He waged an illegal war in Libya.
Entirely false, for two reasons. First of all, it was not technically a war, as Congress did not declare it as such. Second, and more importantly, it was not illegal.
The last time Congress officially declared war was in December 1941.
Here's a fun fact: Congress didn't declare the Vietnam War, Korean war, or any other one since then because it gives the military a much more free rein. It is very unlikely that they will ever "officially" declare war ever again.
Mr. Obama ignored the War Powers Act, flagrantly circumventing congressional authority.
That act is unconstitutional. The Constitution specifies that the President is the Commander in Chief of the military, and does not give Congress the power to control the President's actions in that regard. The act modifies the system of checks and balances, and as such most be put in the form of a constitutional amendment; otherwise it is invalid. Besides, there have been at least 125 occasions where the President has used military action without Congressional approval. There is ample precedent for Obama's actions.
I could debunk pretty much every statement in this moronic article, but I don't think it's necessary. Do you?

Birth control is not only used to prevent pregnancy. Birth control gets prescribed for a variety of medical conditions. As you know condoms were originally "used" to prevent STD"s. When birth control was illegal, condoms were advertised as disease prevention. The repubs keep wanting to take us back to an era when evolution was misunderstood, birth control and abortions illegal, Negoes had no rights, and workers had no rights, no benefits and paid very little.

I'm with you on this one, sweetheart! Will these hateful, spiteful, narrow-minded ignorant people ever get over this derangement syndrome?
Unfortunately, I feel the answer is NO, so we must carry on! (without them).
Some of them will die with this hate. Too bad- but better them than me!

What I can't understand--the Catholics are so against abortion, but they are against birth control too.
Logically, if birth control were readily available to women, that would cut down on abortions.
I must be missing something.

Nope you are not missing anything. Their thinking just does not make any sense. I believe that most women of the Catholic faith use some kind of BC. Why anyone would be against BC is beyond me. How many unwanted pregnancies do they want anyway? This is far beyond stupid. If those women do not protests this bs then they are hypocrites IMO.

What you are missing is the part that states that YOU are to have NO SEX!
NO SEX means no need for contraceptives; ergo, no ABORTION needed or required!
They have it all worked out for YOU -the woman! Trust them, they know!

You're missing the little boys.
Religious folk LOVE little boys.
Stick it in a little boy, you don't need birth control OR an abortion.
It's the catholic solution!
GET IT?

This is interesting that the washington times would dare even use the word bigot. They have a long history of open bigotry. They have have a few well know white supremacists on staff.

Marian Kester Coombs is a woman who believes America has become a "den of iniquity" thanks to "its efforts to accommodate minorities." White men should "run, not walk" to wed "racially conscious" white women and avoid being out-bred by non-whites.
It is not only a cult run newspaper, but it is full of bigots.

And I must thank her for showing us what a cowardly, inferior, frightened piece of spit she really is. But she won't last, thank goodness. Father Time and Mother Nature will deal with her as no one else can. That's why I have no worries about her or people like her.
I never forget that "everybody gets a turn"- whether it is in "the barrel" or "free" out on the playground of life!

They are against contraception and abortion because they are afraid that the brown population will be the majority in a decade. If we breed more, that won't happen, it is the only argument that makes any sense.
- 3 votes
weld, try this:
all the abortions since 73 in USA. If you accept that all were born and natural 50% would have had a family themselves = 75 million missing Americans today.
About 35 million would be brown population.
Think about it. If Catholics were against black and brown people, they would promote abortions, not prohibit them.
The enemy is some one else. The army did use Catholics to protect brown and black voter rights marchers a couple generations ago.
this is whats gonna happen.
catholic men are gonna scream and cry and bitch and moan all the way through november.
and then 65% of the catholics are gonna vote for obama.
thats how catholics roll.

I think what the GOP is mad about is that Obama is anti fake christian. All the people in the GOP are fake christians because they don't want health care for the sick and don't want to help the poor. Jesus was all about helping the poor and healing the sick. The GOP is against Jesus and christianity and they hate the democrats for obeying God.

Employers should not be able to tell employees what kinds of medicine they can take.
If the catholic church doesn't want people to use their insurance for birth control, then they'd better stop paying them wages too while they are at it.
In the end, it all comes down to the exact same thing.
This latest attack gambit is a bull@!$%# attempt at distraction.

everyone seems to end their speech with god bless America. Does he bless America? Does he bless North Korea, Iran, Somalia? Do the speech givers in those counrties end their speechs the same way? Would it be better if the prez ended his speech with god bless the world.
- 1 vote
I couldn't agree more. Just because we ask God to bless us doesn't mean He is on our side. We in turn should not ask for blessing, but bless God for all that He has done for us. When we praise God we focus on Him, not our needs as a nation, but about our nation's need to please God who is our creator.

It's kind of aggravating when people say or write ridiculous opinions like "[Insert name of politician] wants to destroy America/hates Jesus/hates women/wants good people to live in the street/..." You get the idea.
There are plenty of intelligent, reasoned arguments that you can employ to go after the president or anyone else in office, but this kind of nonsense just 1) makes you look like an insane person, 2) causes sensible people to reject your voice, and 3) actually impedes the ability of anyone else to make a reasonable argument because then it turns into "oh those people over there are all just racist, bigoted, uneducated liars," and then no one hears any of the voices from your side.
Hyperbole is killing any chance to get people to actually analyze the important things.

it is a good point, it is also the intention of said Hyperbole.
